Nestle After Eight Straws
Advantages: Taste great, are 'moreish'.
Disadvantages: I kept opening the tube upside down, so clearer marks on the tube would help!
I am very familiar with After Eight mints as I grew up eating them after many a Sunday lunch. However, I was less familiar with these Nestle After Eight 'Straws' which I recently saw in my local supermarket and decided to try. I should point out that if you are looking out for these that the packaging design has now changed from the featured picture in this Dooyoo review. The tube is now dark green and looks a lot like the packaging of the original after dinner mint. Anyway these After Eight 'Straws' are basically comprised of a mint paste centre with a dark chocolate coating in the shape of a long stick or straw.
The straws come in a 15 centimetre long tube which is printed on it's side with product information. The packaging did confuse me a little bit at first. This is because the tube has what looks like a 'top' - a smaller end of the tube which you can twist slightly and pull out. However, this turns out to be the base of the cylinder. So a few times I opened the tube upside down. The base is actually like a little tub or desk tidy pot which has a 3 inch high plastic wall in which the straws sit. The longer outer tube then goes over the top of this when you are finished eating. The plastic inner compartment is quite cute and helpful in containing the straws and although it would look nice on a dinner table although I am concerned that it is made out of non recyclable plastic rather than cardboard like the outer tube covering.
The straws inside my pack were mostly intact but a few had snapped and were lying at the bottom of the plastic compartment. The straws are around 11-12 centimetres long and have brilliant white centres which are visible at each end. The dark chocolate coating is like shiny ebony. The aroma when you first open the packet is of rich cocoa and tingling fresh mint.
The straws have a minty core that is creamily smooth in texture and milky and minty fresh in taste. The ingredients include soya lecithin as a thickening agent as well as whey powder, cream powder and whole milk powder. This minty centre has a silky soft feeling and it melts on the tongue. The dark chocoate shell has more of a paste-like texture and has that strong, bitter cocoa taste. This is offput slightly by the zingy peppermint oil flavour. Overall the taste of these straws is absolutely wonderful and I prefer them much more to the original square thin After Eight Mints with their dripping liquid mint centres. I found these straws so tasty that I finished them off pretty quickly and found that once I'd had one I wanted to have several of them!
Nutritional values are given per 100g and there are 90g of product contained in the pack. So 100g provides 526 calories and 31.0 grams of fat. Full ingredients are listed and the straws may contain nuts.
I will certainly be buying these again and I think they are a brilliant snack for people with sweet teeth as well as being a great after dinner mint to put out with coffees at the end of a big meal.
