A nice tasty variety of doughnut

Nestle are a trusted food brand and this product is no different. It wasn't really until recently that I began eating and enjoying doughnuts because for whatever reason, as a child I never really ate them ever now that I think back on it. So in my new found love of doughnuts, I have begun to try out different brands and flavours and it is no different for this product, hence my decision to buy them this week and review them also.

Upon opening the packaging there is not real overwhelming smell and even close up to the doughnuts, they are still very mild. So in this way, there is no real extra pleasure from the aroma.

Eating the doughnuts is very enjoyable. They are soft and spongey and the icing topping compliments the flavour of the doughnut perfectly. Although they are very moreish, the consistency means that you will still feel very full. The smarties compliment it excellent adding even more sweetness, without being too sweet, and provide an additional texture to the eating experience. The chewiness with the hard crunchiness works very well and is pretty unique to your bog-standard doughnut.

The price is usually about £1 for four doughnuts. This is pretty reasomable these days with the price of luxuries (they may not be ott but they aren't necessary by any means!) seeming to increase in price by the day. We tend to buy 2 packs so that everyone in the house gets a try of whichever flavour we're trying out at the time, and it suits our family of 5-7 at any time well.

      The ingredients include:
      Dough, Filling, Icing, Chocolate Chips.
Dough: Whaet Flour, Vegetable Fat and Oil, Water, Sugar, Yeast, Emulsifiers (E471, E322, E481), Lactose, Egg Yolk Powder, Salt, Full Fat Soya Flour, Raising Agents (E450, E500), Flavouring , Flour Treatment Agent (E300).
Filling (13.6%): Golden Syrup, Glucose Syrup (Contains Sulphur Dioxide), Water, Butter (With Added Salt), Sweetened Condensed Milk (Sugar, Milk Solids, Butterfat), Modified Maize Starch, Salt Flavouring, Gelling Agent (E440).
Icing (12.1%): Sugar, Vegetable Fat, Whole Milk Powder, Skimmed Milk Powder, Cocoa Powder, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Salt, Flavouring.
Chocolate Chips (6.1%): Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Mass, Venilla Natural, Emulsifier (E476).

I'm not so sure if I would recommend because although they do taste great they are a little too irresistible for our house and tend to run out within the hour.

        Disadvantages

Not a bad doughnut, but I've had nicer & was a little dissapointed.

I bought some of these from Tesco Yesterday as they were on offer & looked quite appetizing. They were priced at a reduced £0.73 for a pack of 6 down from £1.49.

The doughnuts are a standard plain ring doughnut, with nothing inside, topped with chocolate which has been covered in loads of broken up smarties hard candy shells (similar to what you would find in a Smarties Mcflurry but smaller). They look very colourful & appealing to children & come in a plastic box that is sealed by a ring of card wrapped around it.

When I was eating the doughnuts, I thought that they were OK. But I have eaten nicer doughnuts. I found the dough a little dry & also not quite as soft as I'm used too. The topping did taste nice, although I must admit that I prefer the chocolate icing that you can find on the Tesco own brand ones that they sell (the doughnut is nicer in those too). Plus because it was solid chocolate, it did nothing to help overcome the fact they were a little dry.

I wouldn't buy them again at full price. I would consider buying them for the reduced price, although I would prefer Tesco's other doughnuts & would buy those over these. They're not bad, but in my opinion, they're not very good either.

        Disadvantages

Not For Me And I LOVE Smarties!!!

I just told you about how disappointing the Rolo Doughnuts are and at the end I said these Smarties ones are naff too, then I remembered I've never written about them so I thought I had better tell you a bit more about them instead of just saying to avoid them.

The one's I've had weren't the ones in the photo Dooyoo have got up, well they were but they had white icing instead of chocolate icing and you get 4 in a pack instead of 6.

The doughnut is plain inside but has got quite thick sticky white icing on top and then that's topped off with crushed up Smarties. The Smarties are crushed up quite small and when you take the doughnuts out of the pack there's quite a bit of chocolate dust in the bottom.

The trouble is that there's not a lot of taste to anything in the doughnut, the doughnut itself is proper bland and chewy and even though the icing is thick it only tastes of sugar and nothing else. The only nice flavour on them is the Smarties and they're crushed up that small that you can't hardly taste them over the mega sweet icing!

I don't like the texture of the doughnut much either because it's very heavy and chewy, dry as well and even if you have a doughnut and think it's too stodgy then at least it should have a bit of a greasy taste and not be that dry you feel like you're going to choke on it! The icing has got a proper weird not quite set texture that I don't think feels or tastes very nice, the sweetness of the icing wrecks the tiny bit of flavour that the Smarties give the doughnut and I just think it makes them taste overpowering and sickly.

I'm not going to bother with these gimmiky doughnuts again because they're always majorly disappointing, give me a good old fashioned raspberry doughnut any day!

Not recommended.... weird sticky icing and bland doughnut!!!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Lots of people will like them but they are unhealthy.

These are brilliant doughnuts, with the usual high quality of Nestle, a great taste and texture as they will melt in your mouth. They're great value for money, very filling and everyone will love them. However, they are very unhealthy, quite sickly and very very sticky.

The packaging is very bright and easy to recognise with the usual Smarties branding. The text is quite easy to read, but can be hard it places with the small text on a bright background. The packet opens very easily, but can be very sticky inside, meaning you will get sticky hands before you even start. However, the product is always fresh. It can be closed easily, and the product will stay fresh for quite a while.

When you open the packet, they don't have a very strong smell, but looking at them will encourage you to eat one as they look very delicious.

Then, they will start to melt in your mouth which is very good and silky smooth. They are very sweet with the topping, but not too sweet. They are very filling, but also addicting so you will want another but you won't need to have it. The doughnut is very rich and soft, but the smarties work perfectly with it, being sweet and milky. The textures also work together very well, with the chewy cake part working with the creamy topping.

The price is very good, with them usually available for £1, with 4 doughnuts. They are filling and high quality, making them great value for money.

They are very high quality, with the same great taste every time and the freshness expected from Nestle.

However, they are extremely unhealthy with lots of fat and calories. They are also very sickly, making it sometimes hard to finish one.

Overall, they are very nice with a great taste and the usual high quality that you can expect from Nestle. They are cheap but also very unhealthy.

            See review.

My daughter has developed a penchant for the cakes I will very soon be reviewing for your good selves. After attending a party a few months ago, one of the boys from her class decided that he would see exactly how many mini doughnuts he could eat in one sitting, this has made in a bit of a hero at school with the tale of him being able to 34 doughnuts being the latest story to be banded around, 34!, he is only 7 years old and like a rake, it really isn't fair!

After this particular party my daughter decided she would try the mini doughnuts, this in turn has lead to her eating the full size ones with as many sprinkles and adornments as possible!

The product I will now review is - Smarties iced ring doughnuts"

These particular doughnuts are available from the bread and cake aisle, there are a few different varieties to pick from, but these were on offer so these went into the basket first!

The doughnuts come in there own clear plastic flip lidded tray, with a simple cardboard sleeve over the top, on this is all the vital information needed.

To open you simply un-pop the two poppers on the front lip of the tray and lift.

The doughnuts are the bog standard size, and are a light brown colour with the merest hint of a glaze. Across the top is a thick white icing that has a thick covering of crushed up Smarties sprinkled on the top.

There is not much of a scent to this cake, you can smell the sweetness of the icing more than anything else and a slight "fresh bread" scent but that's it.

The taste is sublime, the thick and chewy consistency of the sweetish bread doughnut is offset perfectly by the sweet thick icing, (which I find sticks to the roof of your mouth, perfect!), then finally the layer of shards of Smartie pieces that either a add sweet crunch or a smooth and melting chunk of chocolate to the proceedings.

The nutritional information is as follows -
            Per doughnut,

            250 kcals
            10.3g sugars
            14.1g fat
            6.6g of which saturates
            0.2g salt

In each box you will get four of these doughnuts, the price at the moment being £1.00, though the usual price is around the £1.40 mark, still a good price I feel.
