Advantages: Fruity, warming, quick and easy
Disadvantages: Sometimes go stale quickly
After reading a few reviews of this product on here recently, I was reminded by how much I actually like them and promptly took myself down to Sainsbury's to procure a packet. Yum yum.
These lovely cinnamon and raisin bagels are made by the New York Bakery and come in packs of 5. They can be found in the bakery section of most large supermarkets and retail for £1.29 in Sainsbury's. They are fairly easy to find on the shelves, due to the eye catching picture of Lady Liberty herself on the front of the pack. They come in plastic bags, which is useful as it helps to keep the bagels fresh and conviniently, like bread, they come with a tie so that you can reseal the packet to prevent them from going stale quickly.
We are assured on the pack that these bagels are baked in the traditional method of simmering the dough in boiling water - I think it is a nice touch to tell us how these are made. The nutritional information including the all important calorie and fat content are clearly displayed on the back of the pack and are 215 cals and 1.7g of fat per bagel, for anyone watching their weight. The best before date is printed on the yellow label - not immediately obvious, but the normal place for most bakery products. They are also suitable for vegans - best hide from my housemate.
These bagels are a decent size, probably a couple of inches thick and about 6 inches wide. I would measure them, but I don't have a ruler and my housemate would laugh at me, so you'll have to be satisfied with my guestimates. When you open the packet, you can smell the cinnamon straight away, which wraps it scent around you - yummy! The bagels are firm, as they should be, and have a slightly sticky texure, which would be the fruit and the cinnamon.
I like to slice mine in half and toast them. When you cut them in half, you can see exactly how packed full of fruit they are and the raisins they use are always big, juicy and enticing. I have a confession; I sometimes pick the raisins out and eat them. I don't know what they do to them, but they are a treat on their own!
When you toast these bagels, the smell is really enticing and warming. It will make your kitchen smell like a bakery - definately a good thing, in my eyes. These toast really well (assuming you don't leave them in the toaster for hours), coming out a lovely golden colour and butter melts into them perfect and they don't go soggy at all. Tastewise, they are sublime, that lovely doughy bagel taste, being warm and comforting until you suddenly bite into the sweetness of one of the raisins. Gorgeous. The cinammon is not overpowering, but leaves a pleasant aftertaste in the mouth.
Although toasting them with a cup of coffee is my preferred way to eat these, these bagels are also yummy enough not to be toasted! I often butter one to take to work with me for my breakfast and even untoasted, they are still delicious.
These bagels do need to be eaten within a couple of days - and make sure you seal the packet well. If they do go stale, they are still suitable for toasting, but don't eat them just as they are - they will be just that little bit too hard and dry. I find that keeping them in the fridge helps them to last longer - they also freeze well.
All in all, I love these bagels and at £1.29 a pack, they're not going to break the bank and they keep me eating breakfast at work during the week when I don't have time to eat at home.
Summary: A fantastic bagel
