I was looking for some different kind of tasty nibbles for when some friends were coming for the evening, when I came across Nobbys Nuts in the BBQ flavour. They aren't just peanuts, but coated peanuts, which makes alot more difference than it sounds. I paid a pound per 140g bag, and there were no scraps left at the evening which tells you that they went down well and proved good value.
The peanuts are coated in a light but crispy flavoured shell, which holds much more flavour than other favoured nuts. It also means that you don't have a powdery flavouring doused all over the nuts so they make a nicer, less finger messy party snack. The coating is crispy and not unfriendly to teeth, leading you to the tasty peanut inside.
The BBQ taste is very nice and not as spicy as some takes on this. There's a smokiness there as you would expect, and a touch of sweetness too. Lastly, you can actually taste and smell the nuts which is important for me too. Overall these are really moreish, and were popular even with those that don't normally like peanuts. They commented on how the Nobbys Nuts don't make you thirsty like traditional salted peanuts can and they are right. I also found them a bit more filling even though it's just a little coating that's been added - but I still couldn't resist going back for more!
A 30g serving contains 17% of an adult's recommended intake of salt, so it is still there even if the nuts taste less thirst inducing than some. There is also 15% of your recommended fat intake in the same serving, but I suppose no one buys nuts expecting them to be fat free, because by nature they aren't. I will happily eat these delicious snacks in moderation and I will be looking out for other flavours. I recommend them if you like flavoured peanuts and really want to taste that flavouring!
I really fancied a bag of nuts the other day when I was in Sainsburys but I didn't fancy the typical salted or unsalted so I had a quick look at Nobby's Nuts .. rude I know!
There were a few flavours to choose from including sweet chili but it was in fact Smokin BBQ that caught my eye.
Nobby's Nuts come in black 140g bags with a different colour banner for each flavour. Smokin BBQ come with the deep purple banner. We are told that these are coated peanuts and there is a picture of a few scattered on the packet. The packaging is quite a thick packaging but you only need to tear the corner to get inside.
I found these nuts so flavoursome and moreish it was hard not to devour the whole packet in one go and I found myself going back to them everytime I passed the kitchen cupboard. They had a sweet tangy yet savoury scent to them that was just mouthwatering. The coating is a thin crisp shell which is what holds the flavour. The coating was very tasty, tasting of a sweet bbq sauce with a subtle spicy savouryness to it. After nibbling through the thin flavoursome shell I'd bite down into a hard crunchy nut which mixed perfectly with the toothsome casing.
Now something so tasty and moreish definitely has it's drawbacks right so after looking at the nutritional info I've found that a 40g serving (of this 140g bag) contains;
1.34g salt equivalent
The outer shells are the making of these nuts it is them which provide the flavour and funky tastes therefore these nuts are different, exciting and tasty to eat rather than bland and boring. I didn't even find them that dry and can't wait to get another bag on my shopping trip this week!
I purchased a packet of Nobby's Nuts for £1.26 from my local Tesco store when looking for something different from crisps.
I have tried these before (when they first came out) and was a massive fan!
Nobbys Nuts are peanuts which are coated in a crispy shell which is flavoured (in this case with Smokin' BBQ).
The package is easy to open with a small tear at the top to allow you to tear off a corner and start pouring them out. Although the hole that was torn was just not large enough and I did find myself accidentally splitting half the packet open and throwing nuts all around the place (thank goodness I'm female with a comment like that!).
The smokin' BBQ coating is absolutely delicious and quite spicy and BBQ-esque (as expected!), I found myself enjoying about 3/4 of the packet before I was desperate for a cold drink to wash them down with!
I'm not usually a fan of nuts but I could easily manage a whole packet of these spread over a day or so!
It is very high in calories (214 calories and 13.6g of fat per 40g serving) so is definitely best enjoyed as an occasional treat rather than an accompaniment to your packed lunch for work!
Each packet has a little interesting fact printed on the back along with the usual nutritional information, ingredients list, barcode etc. There is also a logo of somebody putting something in to a bin so they are trying to promote not littering (always a good thing as I despise litterbugs!).
Also, the package contains the recyclable logo but I don't think our local service would take it for recycling (seems a little too celophane like!).
If you are not completely satisfied there is an address to send your letter to and you have to address it to "I want a word" which I think shows that they've got a good sense of humour.
There are lots of other flavours of Nobbys Nuts available and different varieties of nuts (cashews etc), this review was for the peanut variety.
These nuts are delicious and I'd definitely rate them 5/5, they are moreish and I want them whenever I see them, however, they never seem to be on special offer which is a great shame as I would definitely stock up!
