One of the things I have touched on in so many of my Dooyoo reviews is my passion for supporting small companies wherever I can. If there is a product I buy that is made by a small producer rather than a large company then I will purchase it. This has often led me to finding amazing things, especially in the speciality food area, where I have found countless small producers who reflect not only a desire to create something unique and individual, but often this will reflect the landscape or the beauty of the place it is made. These companies are often operating with ethics at the forefront of their enterprise, so environmental protection often comes above profit and for me this is particularly appealing.
So meet Oceanic Oatcakes- my latest find! Eating oatcakes has always been a pleasure of mine- I love them with hummus or cheese, as well as with raspberry conserve, marmalade or my favourite- Nutella. I love all the varieties in supermarkets and have tried most of them, but these beauties surpass all the competition in terms of taste and ingredients! These oatcakes have a long history and have been handmade in Skibhoul Bakery on the island since 1885! They only have three ingredients- oatmeal, vegetable oil and water from the Atlantic. They literally collect sea water from a few miles off the coast and use it to make the oatcakes. As the sea water is rich in salt there is no need to add extra, so the oatcakes really are made simply from a trio of simple ingredients! The water is collected from a place where the Atlantic merges with The North Sea at Muckle Flugga in buckets, and is then sterilised and filtered before use in the bakery. The vegetable oil is a mixture of rapeseed and palm oils, and care is taken to ensure that the latter is purchased from sustainable sources only. This marriage between the oil, oatmeal and the seawater creates perfection in my opinion, and I have become a regular buyer of these oatcakes by mail order!
I really look forward to my box arriving as it does within a week of ordering. They have a secure online shop, and you can purchase any amount of the oatcakes packets of 8 in multiples of 6 12 or 18, and in doing so you can pick between the different options of oatcakes. There are "extra grainy" which are thick and have added pinhead oatmeal and extra crunchy toasted oatmeal, (these are my favourite) grainy oatcakes which are the same but without the pinhead oatmeal, fine oatcakes, and a new variety which have been made with chilli flakes and sweetened with apple juice. These were inspired by the annual "Up Helly Aa" Shetland Viking fire festival and certainly have a chilli flavour and make a unique change to traditional oatcakes. As I said my favourite are the extra grainy oatcakes- these are rustic and delicious, and have a real bite to them. All the oatcakes come in the traditional triangular shape which makes a great canvas on which to pile on your favourite toppings! The oatcakes are full of flavour, due I am sure to the sea water which is rich in minerals and salt and imparts some of the rustic nature to the Scottish oats.
All the oatcakes retail for £2 for a pack of 8 large sized oatcakes and all are vegetarian society approved. As oats contain gluten these are not suitable for those with coeliac disease, but they are suitable for those following wheat free diets. Postage charges are at cost, and the oatcakes are always well packaged and arrive freshly baked with a good shelf life ahead of them.
These oatcakes have been mentioned in the 2011 Lonely Planet guide to Shetland and are highly recommended as an artisan product to seek out in these northern isles. I can easily see why - as to me they are streets ahead of most of the competition.
Oats are so good for you, packed full of fibre and low gi so they really fill you up for longer. I often take them on picnics as an alternative to bread. They have only been sold mail order for a year now, so this is the chance to try them as they break out for the first time from the island they have graced for over a century. Historic, ethical and absolutely delicious, and actually rather exciting- I love these rustic beauties! Highly recommended!
