Great tasting gingerbread biscuits for little ones

We are huge fans of the Organix snack range in our house, and love their flavoured rice cakes, carrot crisps and fruit gummies to name just a few so when I spotted the Gingerbread Men I could not resist buying them for my daughter.

      ~What they are~

Organix Goodies Gingerbread men are small gingerbread biscuits for little ones and are suitable from 12months. They are naturally sweetened with grape juice and made from wholegrain flour.

They contain no artificial colours or flavours, no added salt and no hydrogenated fat. They are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

The Gingerbread Men need to be stored in a cool dry place and once opened need to be stored in an air tight container.

      ~Appearance~

Each biscuit is around 3 inches tall and is shaped like a little man with a smiling happy face. The biscuits are around 4mm thick. They are the perfect size for little hands to manage with ease.

      ~Taste~

My daughter loves these. They have a lovely mild taste with just a hint of ginger and are not overly sweet but they are really moreish and I quite often steal one (or 2!).

      ~Price & Availability~

A 135g box containing 15 biscuits costs around £2 and is widely available from supermarkets, chemists and online.

      ~Summary~

These biscuits are really lovely and a nice snack for little ones. My daughter loves the taste and they are the perfect size for little hands to manage with ease.

        Organix Gingerbread

Every kids favourite, the gingerbread man is now available in organic form for babies!

Organix make a wide range of baby foods and snack products and the latest we have tried are the organic gingerbread men. I love having snacks available for my little girl between her meals or as a tasty treat after her dinner but I am always on the lookout for something healthy and not bad for her. I think this is why the Organix range is so good as they have a no junk promise. Their no junk promise says that by, "choosing Organix you are helping to give your baby the best start in life. Our organic foods are prepared with care to give your baby natural tastes and flavours. We use ingredients that are grown or reared organically without artificial pesticides and with respect for the environment and our no junk promise guarantees no unnecessary artificial ingredients."

The gingerbread men contain organic wholegrain flour and are sweetened only with organic grape juice. I have tried them and I have to say they are actually very nice. They are not as ginger tasting as regular adult biscuits but they still have a nice flavour and they are sweet without being too sugary which is nice as I don't want my little girl to grow up with a sweet tooth. You can definitely see and taste the wholewheat in them too. When I give them to my little girl they dissolve in her mouth easily and then become a big soggy and are good to suck. They take quite a long while to get through so they are a good snack if you want to give them to your baby to buy yourself a little time while you are preparing more food for them or wanting to eat your own dinner and keep her occupied for a while.

What I also love about these biscuits is that they're very cute looking and fun and what could be better for a little girl! They have a smiley face on them and buttons down the front of his body. They are for toddlers 12 months plus but I give them to my 9 month old and have had no problems with them.

Each box comes with 15 men in them and cost about £1.50.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

There's no way these gingerbread men would be able to run away fast enough from my daughter.

Organix do a wide range of baby and toddler foods which are available in most major supermarkets. Under the Organix name is a range called Goodies, this offers a no junk promise which includes no added sugar, no hydrogenated fat and that the food is made with wholegrain and is organic.

I bought the Organix Goodies Ginger Bread men from my local Tesco's and they cost me £1.65 for 15 biscuits. They are however on offer in Tesco's until the 10/05/10 and have been reduced to £1. They are very easy to find down the baby aisle as they come in a bright orange box, within the box is a plastic tray split in to 3 sections each housing 5 gingerbread men. Once opened though I do recommend you store them in an air tight container to stop them going soft.

The gingerbread men are approximately 2 inches tall and have a crumbly texture to them but not too crumbly that they break up in the child's hand. They and are fairly sweet but do not contain any added sugar as they are naturally sweetened with grape juice. A full list of ingredients is displayed on the back of the box in a really simple and clear way:

          Organic Wholegrain Wheat Flour 30%
          Organic Wheat Four 30%
          Organic Grape Juice Concentrate 28%
          Organic Unhydrogenated Palm Oil 8%
          Organic Sunflower Oil 2%
          Organic Ginger Less than 1%
Raising Agent Sodium Bicarbonate Less than 1%
          Junk 0%

          Total 100%

I like the way they list the ingredients so it's easy to se exactly what you're putting in to your children with a quick glance. I don't go out of my way to buy organic food in our house, but it is nice to know that no nasty additives are in the food that I give to my daughter and I don't have to think twice before giving any of the Organix range to her. As they are made with wholegrain they take longer to digest meaning your little one should stay satisfied for longer and I must say they do seem to keep her going between meals.

Taste wise they do taste like gingerbread men although perhaps not quite as sweet as the ones I'm used to eating and definitely nowhere near as unhealthy. Although my opinion counts, I am not the one that eats them (well not most of time), that jobs is my 15 month old daughters and I can tell you they go down very well indeed. As soon as I hand one over she just snaps his head off with no sense of guilt and shoves it in. As with any biscuits though I would recommend having a drink on hand just in case their mouths get dry and need a little help swallowing.

On the box it does say that they are not suitable for children under 12 months and are produced in a factory that makes food containing nuts. However they are suitable for vegetarians.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A good snack to have to hand.

My little one is at the stage where she needs a snack or two to get her through the day, and as I love gingerbread, these were an obvious choice for me. At £1.66 for 15, they seemed a little expensive to me, but I decided they were worth a try.

Each gingerbread man is perfectly formed, and perfectly sized for little hands or dunking (for the grown ups). In fact, you could describe them as mini gingerbread men (or gingerbread children). Sweetened with grape juice instead of cane or beet sugar, they give a burst of energy without too many nasties.

            (Ingredients list:
Organic Wholegrian Wheat Flour 30% ,Organic Wheat Flour 30%, Organic Grape Juice Concentrate 28%, Organic Unhydrogenated Palm Oil 8%, Organic Sunflower Oil 2%, Organic Ginger Less than 1%, Raising Agent Sodium Bicarbonate Less than 1%)

The ginger flavour is quite mild, but sufficient for them to taste like gingerbread rather than like plain biscuits. My little one loves them, and so do I. I know that I can give her one and it won't stop her eating her dinner, but on the other hand I also know it will keep her going easily if we're on the move especially. As for me, well, I like the taste and the fact that they are quite small makes them a perfect nibble on the go.

              We'll take or leave them

Organix make a great range of baby and children's food, from fruit puree's, puddings to rice cakes and raisins and gingerbread biscuits.

These 'No Junk' Gingerbreads come in two pack sizes. One is a pack of 15 packaged in one tray, the other is 12 gingerbread 'people' packaged in 6 twin packs. We have tried both and they are exactly the same. I purchased mine from the Poundshop for £1, but I have also seen them in the likes of Asda and Tesco for around £1.30.

It does say on the packet that these are only for 'big kids - aged 3 years and upwards', although I have been giving these to Jake (16 months) for some time now.

Presently the cardboard box wrapper has loads of info on both the outside and the inside about paper, how it is made and recycling. There are also instructions for making paper. This would be great fun for older kids and educational too.

These little gingerbread people, both boys and girls, are around 2 x 2.5 inches. They are sweetened with grape juice and I find that this is the stronger flavour above the ginger.

I find the biscuits to be quite soft, which is good for little people, but with the sweet grape juice taste I find these a little stale tasting.

My son can take or leave them, he much prefers a proper gingerbread man from the bakery, and so do I.

Overall, these are handy for when we are out and about, I carry a couple with me for him to munch on, to pacify him. For that, they are useful and are fairly decent value, but don't expect too much flavour.

              Disadvantages

              A winner!

I can't believe how good these little beauties taste - my son has got his hands full trying to keep me off them! It's not very often that you find a product which is a sweet and tasty treat for your toddler, but which also isn't chock-a-block full of rubbish, E numbers and sugar.

These are a different kind of snack altogether. Organix are well known for producing good, healthy snacks for toddlers and their range is stocked in most major supermarkets.

The taste is lovely and naturally sweet, with a definite gingerbread flavour. They also have a nice bite to them without being too hard and are perfect as a mid morning or afternoon snack for just about anyone!

My son absolutely loves them and since he's started nursery he takes them in his snack-pot. I can feel better about the fact that he's eating something relatively healthy and the snack pot always comes home completely empty!

              Advantages

A great treat snack, which you don't need to feel too guilty about

My little boy was poorly this week with a horrid cold, so when I was in Boots stocking up, I saw these little biscuits looking tempting from the shelf and thought that I would buy them as a treat.

I am always very careful about what I feed my boy, and so even for a treat I need to be convinced that I am not feeding him junk. So as much as I was tempted by the cute picture of the gingerbread on the packet, I was more tempted by the "No Junk Promise" of no added sugar, hydrogenated fat and whole grain logo.

Still cautious, checking the back of the packet the ingredients too looked pretty good:

              Wholegrain Wheat Flour 30%
              Wheat Flour 30%
              Grape Juice Concentrate 28%
              Palm Oil 8%
              Sunflower Oil 2%
              Ginger less than 1%
              Raising Agent less than 1%

The ingredients having passed the "Mum" test, even though there seems a pretty high quota of grape juice concentrate, I thought I would give it a go.

The biscuits themslves are really cute gingerbread man shaped (as you would expect really) but just the right size for little fingers to hold. I gave
one to my little boy, and after a quick smell and a lick, he bit the head off and chewed away happily. Given that he only has 6 teeth, I was pretty impressed as they are quite solid biscuits to chew, but he seems to manage pretty well. The rest of the gingerbread man soon followed (as probably would the rest of the packet if I let him) so I can safely say they were a hit with him.

In the interests purely of consumer research you understand, I tried one of the gingerbread myself and have to say they are really yummy. For a child snack, they were surprisingly tasty and had a really subtle gingery taste. In fact, if they hadn't been quite so pricey at £1.89 for 15 I would have been tempted to try a couple more just to check they were all as tasty, but managed to restrain myself to save the rest for my boy.

So, I would definately buy these again, not as an everyday snack, but they do make a nice treat and did make my snuffly boy smile.

                Tasty Organic Biscuits

Although I like to make most of the food and snacks for the children in my care I do buy some treats and foods for outings and trips. I do try and buy healthy foods and snacks for the babies and children I look after and I usually buy the baby/toddler food from Boots. On a recent trip to Boots I noticed the Organix range which has a no junk promise and has won several Mother & Baby Awards which gave me the confidence to buy this range. I bought a box of the gingerbread men.

                ~No Junk Promise~

                No added sugar
                No hydrogenated fat
                Organic
                Whole grain

                ~Packaging~

These gingerbread men are attractively packaged and come in a brightly coloured box which is orange, green and blue with Goodies in blue wrting and a picture of a little boy and girl holding a gingerbread man. Inside is a plastic tray split into three sections and sealed with cellophane each section contains five gingerbread men. Each box contains 15 gingerbread men and weighs 135g e.

                ~The Gingerbread Men~

The gingerbread men are quite small about two and half inches high and are just the right size for little hands to hold. They are really cute and have smiley faces, two little arms and two little legs and three buttons as do most gingerbread men . They are a lovely golden brown colour.

                ~Taste And Texture~

These have a slight crunch but are not as hard as gingerbread men usually are which makes them ideal for your little one to bite and chew. They melt in your mouth and you can taste the ginger. These taste a lot nicer than I expected. Considering there is no sugar in them these taste quite sweet which I assume is down to the grape juice.

                ~Ingredients~

I don't always add ingredients/nutritional Information to my reviews but I think it is important where babies/Toddlers are concerned. These gingerbread men are suitable for vegetarians. Organix gingerbread men contain wholegrain flour and are naturally sweetened with grape juice.

                Organic Wheat Flour 30%

                ~Storage~

Store in a cool dry place. After opening I store these in an airtight container to prevent them from going soggy.

                ~Opinion Overall~

I would reccomend these gingerbread men they are nice for a snack or little treat for your little ones and the babies/toddlers I look after really enjoy these and make Mmmmm noises and smile at the gingerbread men whilst eating them it does take them a while to eat one though whilst mine is gone in seconds. They contain no sugar and are made with half wholegrain flour which increases the vitamin and fibre levels so you can give these to your little one knowing they are good for them. Wholegrains contain more minerals, vits, and fibre and take longer to digest, leaving your little one more satisfied for longer. These are much better than a lot of baby snack foods on the market. The gingerbread men are an excellent size for little hands and also to pack for trips and outings. I will be buying these again and trying more in the Goodies organix range.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Much better than other baby biscuits on the market.

I always like to keep a variety of finger foods in my cupboard to give to my Daughter throughout the day, as I feel that it is important to encourage her to feed herself and get used to a wide range of tastes and textures. Whilst I wanted to keep in stock some biscuits, I found it quite difficult to find a healthy version, as it appears that a lot of baby biscuits contain high amounts of sugar (and in the case of the recently withdrawn Bear Biscuits from Cow and Gate - high levels of trans-fats).

This is where Organix come in - they produce finger food for babies, which comes with a 'No Junk Promise', which means that they include no added sugar, no hydrogenated fat and are made from organic ingredients. I was browsing their range in Tesco looking for a tasty treat, when I discovered these Organic Gingerbread Men and decided to give them a try. They come well recommended as they have been given a gold star in the Mother & Baby Awards 2007/2008 too, which added to my confidence in buying the product.

Each box of biscuits contains 15 little gingerbread men made with wholegrain flour. Something which really appealed to me was the fact that these biscuits are not sweetened with sugar. Instead they are naturally sweetened with organic grape juice! The rest of the ingredients list is equally as good, with no added nasties.

The biscuits themselves are contained within 3 sections of a plastic tray within the outer cardboard box. They are appealing looking characters with a smiley face and 3 buttons included in the design. Each biscuit weighs approximately 9g, is roughly about 3 inches tall and is a lovely golden brown colour. The gingerbread smell is very subtle and can only really be smelt if you put the biscuit right up to your nose and give a big sniff! The taste is obviously quite gingery, but as it designed for babies, it's not too overpowering or strong.

The box suggests that these biscuits should not be given to babies under the age of 12 months, however I have given these to my Daughter from a relatively early age, as she has never had any problems with choking and is always supervised at mealtimes. At first she did struggle to eat these biscuits as she didn't have teeth and they were quite hard for her to bite into. However I tried her with them again after her teeth started to appear and now they are a firm favourite! They are the perfect size for her to hold and as they are a hard biscuit they hold together well in her little hands. She enjoys biting into them and seems to find them easy to chew. Some of the Organix range can be quite messy to eat, but these aren't too bad and don't stain which is great.

I will keep buying these as they are really the perfect sweet treat and I really trust the brand, which is important when buying baby food. I tend to give my baby one biscuit at a time, so a box of 15 lasts for ages making them good value for money (in the region of 11p per biscuit).

These are currently on sale for £1.67 at Tesco.com, although there are occasionally offers on to make them cheaper. They are also available to buy at other large supermarkets and stockists of baby food.

                      Advantages

                      Disadvantages

Arghh all my gingerbread men are headless he-he!

I don't usually buy food that is made for babies; I feed my son the same food that we eat. I have bought a couple of products from the organix range for the occasional treat.

I have browsed the baby food aisle in the supermarket a few times, just to see what there is. I picked up a box of the organic gingerbread men because I like ginger biscuits and the 'No Junk' promise is what attracted me to them. I looked at the ingredients list to see that these are made from all organic goodness.

                      The 'No Junk' promise:

                      * No added sugar
                      * No artificial colourings
                      * No MSG or added flavourings
                      * No hydrogenated fat

The biscuits come in a box with 15 biscuits. The box has all the important information clearly presented with the ingredient and nutrition lists. The biscuits are suitable from 12 months onwards.

They are just the right size for little hands, and would make an ideal treat for a lunchbox.

I wasn't sure what to expect from these biscuits because a lot of baby food is bland and not very nice at all. I thought the flavour might be too strong for my son as ginger is quite a desired/distinct taste. I offered my son one of the biscuits and his face light up he enjoyed playing with the little gingerbread man before biting its poor head off! He devoured the biscuit making an "mmmm" noise whilst chewing so I think he really enjoyed the biscuit. Whenever he see's me bringing him one of the biscuits he gets excited. I love ginger biscuits so I was eager to try one myself. I was quite surprised when I bit into the biscuit as they actually tasted quite nice - so nice that I have bought four boxes since and my son is lucky if he gets more than three from each box. The biscuits are quite soft that they are easy to bite into and they don't make too many crumbs. They have a distinct ginger taste that is not too overpowering it is very subtle and they have a slight buttery after taste. They are soft enough for a little one to enjoy and they do melt in the mouth which reduces the risk of choking. They are not as soft as some of the other biscuits that are aimed at toddlers - so they don't turn to 'mush'. When my son first tried these he sucked on the biscuit and it melted easily for him to eat now that he has enough teeth and has learnt how to chew properly he can eat it without making a mess.

I don't often buy snack foods, and babies under the age of two should only have one gram of sugar and salt a day. These biscuits are perfect as they contain no salt or sugar. All of the ingredients are organic certified apart from the sodium bicarbonate. The biscuits are sweetened with grape juice so you know you are giving your child a nice treat without giving them sugar. Don't forget to brush your little ones teeth after mealtimes.

All of the Organix range has a 'No Junk' promise. So you know that all of their products are healthy. They are also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The biscuits cost around £1.50 but I have never paid full price for them yet as they have been on offer a few times in my local supermarket. I don't mind the high price as they are worth it. They are so good my son has to share them with me. I will definitely be buying these again. I think these are great for an occasional treat.

                        Advantages

                        Disadvantages

                        Great snack for toddlers

The organix range have consistantly impressed me with there great selection of tasty offering which give the little ones a treat but also contain 'no junk'.

When my daughter started snacking more and more during the day I did begin to look at the toddler biscuits that were on offer and was suprised to see how much added sugar they contained. I then spotted the Organix Goodies Gingerbread Men in my local supermarket and was actually rather impressed when I turned the packet round and only found a handful of ingredients and that they were sweeted with friut juice rather than added sugar.

                        Ingredients:

Organic Wholegrain Wheat Flour (30%), Organic Wheat Flour (30%), Organic Grape Juice Concentrate (28%), Organic Unhydrogenated Palm Oil (8%), Organic Sunflower Oil (2%), Organic Ginger (less than 1%), *Raising Agent (Sodium bicarbonate)(less than 1%). While they are quite pricey, but not that much more than other brands, I believe a pack of 12 is about £1.64 and they are frequently on offer for a £1 a box which I think is really reasonable. The organix range is becoming more and more available and you can now pick the range up in ost supermarket and brances of Boots.

                        Taste

They taste pretty good!! Ok I probably wouldn't choose the to dunk in my tea but compared to most toddler treats they do at least have some flavour. The ginger is quite a subtle addition, but it is there and if it were too strong it may not work for the younger toddlers. Both my girls love the whole process of eating these little men and my eldest frequently gives me a running commentary about which limb she is biting off first. She is now 3 1/2 and her tastebud have experienced a much boarder selection of biscuits however she is still happy if I give her one of these gingerbread men.

My younger daughter loves them too and the great thing about them for the younger toddlers is that they are quite solid and don't fall to bits which could cause frustration and a very messy puschair.

In conclusion both me and my daughters think these are great and will be looking to sample other delights from the Organix range.

                          Advantages

                          Disadvantages

A nice tasty snack perfect for all ages!

When it came time for Christmas I was worried that my baby would feel a little left out with all the cookie sharing and eating around the festive period.
I hated to deny her this pleasure, but didn't feel right about all the sugar and unhealthy fats that most cookies contained. But Organix had the solution, that saved the day and her teeth.

                          Description:

The package is in a simple cardboard package with 15 gingerbread men in the separate plastic sleeve that is in the package. The plastic holds the gingerbread in place and assures that their aren't many broken or headless men waiting to surprise you inside. The price I paid in Ireland at Tesco was 2.60 euros which is a little steep, but since it was the holidays I felt it was worth it.

                          Taste/Texture:

You shouldn't bite into these expecting traditional gingerbread or you will be sorely disappointed, there isn't the sweet syrup flavor or spicy after taste, but rather a nice pronounced ginger taste without the accompanying sweetness.
Dont get me wrong these do have a sweet flavor just not to the same extent.

The biscuits are quite firm and not easily crumbled but are still easy to bite into and chew, so I found them perfect for little teeth, and they didnt cause a huge mess with crumbs everywhere.

                          Price/Value:

For the price I was satisfied that I was giving my daughter the best wholesome ingredients, even home baked cookies wouldn't be as healthy as I don't know how many of us use grape juice concentrate as a sweetener rather then sugar.
15 biscuits should also last one child a good amount of time, if they only have a few at a time.

                          Reaction:

My daughter liked these biscuits and would look forward to receiving them as rewards, however once she sunk her teeth into a "real" biscuit she didn't want anything to do with them anymore. A kind hearted aunt gave her a chocolate chip cookie, and my daughter realized what we had been up to, and refused to fall for the "its the same thing" trick.
She will still eat them now and again, but we cant give her one while others eat the real thing, as she will insist on having the "other" kind.

                          Conclusion:

A good tasty biscuit by a leading brand in health food for children.
I would highly recommend them for kids, but if you are already giving your child cookies, she/he might not like these as they aren't as sweet as regular ones.

                            Advantages

                            Disadvantages

nice ginger biscuits for children, tasty for mums

These are currently on promotion in Tescos for £1 for a pack of 15 so we have invested in some. You can expect to pay up to £2 for them depending on where you shop when they are not on offer.

The packaging is bright and colourlful with cartoon characters on it to appeal to children. The ingredients list gives the percentage of everything on it so you can see how the product is made up, and also to reinforce their "no junk" promise. Inside there is a moulded plastic case with further plastic wrap, which for the waste watchers isn't that good, though the biscuits won't get crushed or damaged on the way back from the supermarket. The further downside is that the packaging is in now way resealable which means the biscuits can go soft quite easily. Though this is the norm for normal biscuits, with biscuits for babies and toddlers, even if you were generous enough to give them one a day, this packet would be open for over a fortnight. Easily solved by a plastic tub though, and better than yet more packaging in my opinion.

The biscuits are quite small and gingerbread man shaped. This gives the baby lots of easy bits to grasp and the size fits well into my son's 9 month old mouth. When opening the packet the biscuits are quite hard which makes it hard for pre-teeth mouths to eat quickly. They are supposed to be designed for 12 months + though so maybe this isn't a problem, and they do soften with a good sucking. The problem with items like this taking a while to eat is that it keeps the sugars in the mouth for longer. Organix does not add "empty calories" of refined sugar, but does sweeten with grape juice which still is a sugar, so can damage teeth. Oral health experts I have heard speak recommend these items are eaten at mealtimes rather than as a snack because of this, something which isn't obvious with all the "no junk" "no added sugar" notices on the packaging.

These biscuits taste lovely - they have a mild ginger taste and aren't overly sweet. The texture is just as you'd expect from a plain biscuit. A huge problem for me is that they're too moreish - if I get one from the cupboard for my little boy, there'll be two going in my tum!
