“ Brand: Pearl's / Type: Cake „
I love a bit of fruit cake and so when I spotted this in my local Asda store costing only £1.29 for a rather large box full of it I felt it had to be worth a try as I constantly have visitors at the moment in my home and like to have something in for people to nibble on along with their cup of tea or whatever but have to always be mindful that I'm on a budget like a lot of us are!
Yellow coloured box with a photograph of the cake on the front of it and we are told that it is Pearl's Country Style Farmhouse Fruit Cake 'With juicy raisins and moist cherries'. On the back of the box we are told a bit about the product, ingredients are listed and allergy advice is given and contact details for Pittas Foods Ltd are given (the manufacturer of the product). Inside the cake comes sealed in a see through plastic bag for freshness and all in all the packaging is nice and informative enough.
The Cake Itself:
The cake is round in shape and rather thick with thick sugar granules coated all over the top of it giving it almost what I think of as a crust and is golden underneath that. Made from wheat flour, sugar, eggs, raisins, apple, glacé cherries, apricots , mixed peel and a whole host of other ingredients this is not suitable for anyone allergic to eggs, wheat, gluten, milk, soya or sulphur dioxide though it is suitable for vegetarians.
The cake to me is rather dry not only because the actual cake itself not having enough juicy fruits in it but the thick sugar coating actually helps to create even more dryness. The spongy, cake mixture is dry and not as fluffy as I would have appreciated and although there are some plump, juicy raisins and small pieces of glacé red cherries like i say it is dry and there isn't enough fruit within this in my opinion. Although within this cake golden syrup has been used along with sugar I cant taste that however mixed spices are and I can detect those in abundance.
Crumbly and plain this cake is and although its not vile or anything it just isn't for me really for all the reasons I have listed above. For me it lacks fruit and sugar within the cake but the sugar over the top of it makes it messy to eat and I think the cheap price its sold at is fair for the quality you get!
