Im usually a Butterkist Cinema Sweet popcorn addict but I received this Poppycock Almond and Pecan packet in a Christmas hamper and decided to try it out, waste not want not and all that. A 100g bag is approximately £2.25 My experience- I tore open the pack a little dubious as to what I would find inside, I had never tried this kind of popcorn before so wasn't sure what I was going to find. The first thing I noticed was the smell, expecting a certain amount of nut in the aroma I found myself disappointed that it only smelt like standard toffee popcorn. The first cluster I pull out looks little like the ones pictured on the pack, a clump of 5 pieces of popcorn stuck together but with no sign of any almond or pecan, I try for a 2nd cluster and this time get 4 pieces of popcorn and a brown thing that I seriously hope is a nut. Somehow I'd imagined the 27% nut content would actually have some physical presence. Ok so I try for a 3rd cluster, and theres the nuts! a big ugly cluster of coated popcorn and 3 very scary looking almonds. I take my first bite, from cluster number 2 as it's the more appealing, the coating is sweet with a toffee like taste, like the sugary sweet coating on a toffee apple but not as sickly as Butterkist Toffee coating. The popcorn is quite crunchy and not much like the "fluffy popcorn" described on the back of the pack, the almonds and pecans are overpowered by the toffee coating and only after several moments chewing do you get any hint of the nuts flavour. The popcorn leaves a faint sugary after taste in your mouth but nothing overpowering or unpleasant. The coating is simply too hard and crunchy for my liking, I'm more worried that I'll loose a tooth than be able to really enjoy the snack. The popcorn tastes nice enough but is nothing really special and as for how it looks, well it's pretty unappetizing all clumped together covered in the shiny, syrupy coating. I think it would be easy to finish the 100g bag as there's not really that much popcorn in there but it would take a while to get through it because of the texture of the snack, it isn't a snack you could quickly devour. I personally only had a handful, it told me all I needed to know about the flavour of the snack and it's never good to eat too much of an unhealthy snack anyway (which this definitely is) I don't think I would make any special attempts to have this particular variety of Poppycock again but may be tempted by the other varieties.
