Pringles Prawn Cocktail
Advantages: taste, concept,
Disadvantages: very, very moreish!
If I have one weakness when it comes to snacking it is crisps. I've mentioned in many a review that anything savoury appeals to me and I would much rather enjoy a packet of crisps than a chocolate bar, sit me down with a bag of Salt n Vinegar Walkers and that'll do me. Pringles however are to me the 'cream of the crop' when it comes to savoury snacks and ever since they were introduced in the UK I have managed to chomp my way through many a tube.
Not so long ago when Pringles introduced their Prawn Cocktail flavour I simply had to buy a tube and over time these have proved to be a firm favourite which equal the Barbecue variety in terms of being a first choice option for me. Packaged in a pink tube - why are Prawn Cocktail snacks always marketed in pink, presumably because prawns are pink? Hmmm? - anyway, on the front of the tube is an illustration of a glass with a few Pringles placed within and features a small green cocktail umbrella this is obviously a reference to the 1970's obligatory starter of Prawn Cocktail and, truth be told I think it's quite a nice packaging concept.
We are now informed that there are an average of 90 Pringles inside each tube and to get to the awaiting crispy snack you simply pop off the top, peel back the protective foil and the Pringles await your consumption.
Uniform in shape, size and colour the Pringles themselves are of curved, circular design which is similar to but quite unlike generic potato crisps. These are of a golden colour and each individual Pringle has a dusting of the flavour you have chosen (in this case Prawn Cocktail) and mine have a slight pink tinge to them. Tasting one Pringle and the flavour seems to burst through and fills your mouth with a tangy, slightly sweet taste that certainly gets your taste buds tingling. Some Pringles have more flavour than others but generally they all have a plentiful amount of the same obvious flavour and of course as the old advertising slogan warned; "once you pop you can't stop"
This is the only problem I have with Pringles, the fact that they are *so* delicious means that I find it hard to actually put the tube down once I have opened it and I am rarely surprised to discover that I often manage to eat a whole tube to myself, in one sitting - Oops!
Now I wouldn't feel quite so bad about eating these to excess if they were low in calories or fat, but of course they are not. A 100 gram portion provides a whopping 518 calories and 32 grams of fat (of which 7 grams are saturates) and that's not even in a full tube! Oh dear. A tube contains 165 grams and rather than pile on any more guilt I won't bother to work out how many calories a whole tube would work out to be; suffice to say it's an outrageous amount!
I have a love/hate relationship with Pringles, I love them *too* much and hate the fact that all my good intentions about healthy eating go out of the window when I succumb to the temptation of eating "just 1 or 2", yeah right! Saying that though, this is great news for the manufacturers of these savoury snacks (I don't think they are classified as 'crisps') as their popularity and range of flavours must mean that they are sitting on a goldmine with these.
I won't add a full list of ingredients as truth be told I don't think it is necessary when reviewing something considered as a snack food, veggies will be pleased to know that these are suitable for them though but are not Ok for Vegans however. There are no allergy warnings on my tube but as milk powder is included in the ingredients this may cause some concern to allergen sufferers, so do bear this in mind.
In conclusion then for the taste, addictiveness and absolute pleasure I have when eating these delicious snacks they do warrant a perfect 5/5 dooyoo star rating from me. They are of course highly recommended if you have the willpower to stop after a few, but if you are not concerned about your weight or calories etc then get stuck in; they're delicious!
Thanks for reading my review
