“ Brand: Sainsbury's / Type: Biscuit „
Having been brought up to shop in a manner that meant making savings on basic products could pay for the luxuries, I'm always on the look out for a bargain replacement product. I've always been a fan of a good custard cream with a glass of milk, so when I first spotted these a few months back I thought I'd give them a go.
The packaging is as you would expect from a Basics range product at Sainsbury's - white with bright orange writing. It can be a little annoying as the tear strip in the thin plastic wrapper does not go all the way round. This means that the top 6 biscuits are separated from the rest or can easily fall out if the loose section moves. The price is very reasonable, currently selling at 45p for a 400g packet. It's nearest rival on the website is currently selling for 95p.

Sadly, they are not the healthiest snack choice - but to be honest you don't pick up a custard cream if you're on a diet. Each biscuit contains 56 kcal - 2.8% of your daily allowance. This is fine if you can stick to one, but I rarely can.
I find that they stand up well compared to higher priced alternatives. The filling is more or less identical, and the biscuit is essentially the same. They are a little smaller, and are a little heavier and less crisp than some of their more expensive cousins, but are basically the same thing. They do seem to go soft a little quicker than some other custard creams, but to be honest a packet never lasts too long here anyway!
Most importantly, when dipped in a glass of cold make they go soft and delicious - my favourite way of enjoying a custard cream.
Recently trying to become more economical with the grocery budget, I decided to try a few of the items we buy regularly in a lower range brand. I'm always willing to give it a go once and if we don't like it, I won't buy it again. I won't just buy something because of cost, the rule is we have to like it to! We don't buy branded biscuits often such as Fox's and McVitie's but usually buy the Sainsbury's or Tesco's version. However, a while back I spotted the value range of biscuits from Sainsbury's and decided we would give it a go. My first try was Basic's Custard Creams. They are priced at around 35p and have around 24 biscuits in the packet (400g). The next range up is Sainsbury's normal and the 400g packet costs 65p.
==Packaging and Look==
The packaging isn't particularly inviting, it is the bog standard white and orange of Sainsbury's basic range. These are definitely not biscuits to be giving as presents but once they are unwrapped out of their ugly wrapper these custard creams look identical to the more expensive range. I really don't care about the packaging or what it looks like, it does the job, keeps the biscuits fresh until they go into the biscuit barrel.
I can honestly say I prefer the basic range of custard creams compared to the most expensive brands like Fox's or McVitie's. The Sainsbury's normal range are nice too but in my opinion don't taste any different to the basic range so why pay an extra 30p for the same sized packet? The custard:biscuit ratio is better than the more expensive brands in my opinion so overall I feel like I'm getting more for less money.
I would and I have bought these again and have began making my way through the rest of the biscuits in the Basic's range. Although 30p may not seem like a huge saving to some, over the course of a year on multiple products it can save you a few quid on the grocery bills.
If you are a fan of custard creams, then you will love these. Not only do these biscuits maintain the classic taste of custard creams, they are at a great price. Custard creams have long been a favorite of mine, and now they are more affordable than ever. The key to a good custard cream for me is the quality of the center, the custard cream part, and these don't fail to disappoint. The biscuit is a bit crumbly, but for the basic price, they are most definitely worth the investment. Also each pack contains plenty of biscuits, making even more valuable for money. In the current economic environment, savings on food have to be made. A good way of doing this is avoiding major brands and switching to own brand and basic products. One problem with this, is often the taste disappoints, but with this the difference between own brand and brand is so negligible it is worth switching down.
If you're looking for a quick way to get fat then you will want to buy a pack of these. For 30p a pack from your local Sainsburys, not only are they a great price, they also taste delicious too.
The pack comes in the standard white and red that all of the Sainsburys basics range comes in. On the front it has the name and the slogan "no fancy packaging". The rear has all of the nutritional content, ingredients and other information that you usually find on food products.
On opening the pack there are two rows of the biscuits, in total there are about 20-30 biscuits per pack (I forgot to count before eating them). I have tried more expensive versions before and they look exactly the same as them. Each biscuit is 4cm x 3cm x 1cm in size which make it an easy biscuit to hold and easy to eat in one bite!
When it comes to the taste, they can not be faulted at all. The biscuit is sweet and not too crumbly and the cream tastes slightly custard like, however it is not over powering which I like. Once I start a pack, I find these very addictive and can easily finish off a pack in one sitting. Due to this reason I rarely buy them as otherwise I would be very fat!
If you have not tried these ones before then they are well worth trying. They taste and look like the more expensive brands, the only difference is that they come in a plain white pack and they are about a third of the price. They will be yummy with a hot cup of tea whilst watching TV or reading reviews on here.
These have to have a 5/5 rating as they are simply delicious and for the price you cannot go wrong with them at all.
Yet another product from the Sainsbury's basics range that is of pure quality.
** Where will I find them? **
These tasty treats can be found in the biscuit aisles. I've seen them in nearly every Sainsbury's store I've been in. In the smaller stores that don't stock as much, I'd assume there would be less of these. However, if you do your shopping online then they are, of course, available all the time.
** How will I recognise them? **
They are packaged up in the standard Sainsbury's basics livery. This is the white background with orange writing and a large orange strip across the top. No fuss packaging that tells you exactly what's inside. What more is needed?
** Price **
30 pence. Yes, 30 pence for a packet of Custard Creams! Each biscuit equates to less then a penny. Bargain.
** How many biscuits do I get? **
Well, the standard pack is around 400g. There are normally 34 biscuits in each packet which is excellent value for money. This equates to less than a penny per biscuit.
** What are they like? **
Well, to be honest...the same as the major brands. In terms of appearance, they're the yellowy colour as most Custard Creams are. A generous lay of cream filling has been put through the middle. The biscuit itself isn't extremely crunchy yet it's not crumbly. Sainsbury's have got it spot on in terms of taste, texture and quality
** Calorie crazy! **
Each biscuit contains 56kcals, so I'd watch out for these. Along with 3.2g of fat and 2.6g of sugar per biscuit, I'd make sure these are incorporated into a healthy lifestyle.
** Anything else? **
Yes! Sainsbury's basics Custard Creams are actually amazing at dunking in the traditional cup of tea. Give it a try if you've one to spare.
** Would I recommend these? **
Definitely. Whether you want to try something new, or you're trying to save a few pennies, these Sainsbury's basics Custard Creams are worth purchasing
5 stars. There's no compromise on price or quality here!
