Advantages: Not to overpowering, light and refreshing taste

Disadvantages: Pastry is too soft

When a friend offered me a Sainsbury's Lemon Bakewell this morning, I thought it only polite to accept (would be rude not to really, absolutely nothing to do with the fact I wanted one), and on tasting it, decided I'd write a review.

You see, the Lemon Bakewells weren't exactly what I imagined. Never having tasted one before, I expected it to be much like a normal bakewell tart (where the predominant flavours of the filling are almond and cherry jam), but with a lemon twist. Instead, I found the tarts to be quite different from the norm (in taste, not presentation), with no hint of almond at all. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just a bit unexpected from the name!

Each lemon bakewell is a shortcrust pastry tart, with lemon curd and lemon sponge in the middle, topped with lemon flavoured (and coloured) icing. All this lemon may sound a bit overpowering, but in my opinion Sainsbury's have got the the balance just right. The bakewells taste zingy and refreshing (as lemon should taste), without being sharp. Just the right flavour to go with a cup of tea, I say. The icing is very nice, and the filling good and soft, the only problem being, so is the the pastry. This is a shame as I would personally prefer a bit more bite to the crust, and is going to prevent this product from scoring top marks.

Still, Sainsbury's Lemon Bakewells are definitely worth a try, especially if you fancy something a bit different. They come in boxes of 6 (each tart sits in it's own individual foil case), so are great if you're having some friends round for a cup of coffee and a chat. They may even spark some conversation! The boxes should be easy to find on the shelves, being as they are lemon yellow (of course!) with a picture of the tarts (also very yellow!) on the front.

To finish, for those of you interested in the nutritional side of things, here's the basics per tart:

181kcal
1.6g protein
26.7g carbohydrate (of which sugars is 17.3g)
7.5g fat (of which saturates is 3.0g)
0.4g fibre
0.16g salt

Summary: All in all, not bad little tarts. Worth trying out.
