Disadvantages: No proper flavour to the crisps, very greasy tasting, a strange stale texture
Last night my brother came to visit for a couple of hours, I knew he was coming so had bought a few snacks from Sainsbury's as he has a long drive home and I wanted to make sure he had eaten. He is as addicted to crisps as I am so after looking at all the different flavours in the supermarket I decided to try a new one from the Taste the Difference range - Chorizo, Cheese and Chilli crisps. I do adore unusual tasting crisps and seemed to remember hearing good things about this flavour so didn't mind paying the £1.15 for a 150g bag - after all, the flavour appealed to me and I know my brother enjoys spicy snacks so I knew we'd love them.
Only we didn't. I didn't enjoy them one little bit and I suspect my brother only continued to munch his so as not to look ungrateful!
The crisps seem very greasy tasting, although they are not overly oily to the touch. Considering the strong flavours included in their creation I cannot really that there is very much taste to the crisps, other than the general greasiness and a mild cheesy flavour.
Sainsbury's promised me on the packet that these would have a smoky and spicy flavour, I completely disagree. I suppose there was a minor element of smokiness to them but honestly I have tasted more spice in a bowl of cornflakes! The flavour of the chorizo is so vague as to be barely there and I couldn't detect the chilli at all - which is extremely unusual as I am not fond of the flavour of chilli so can usually pick this particular taste out at 100 paces. There is a little cheese flavouring and this for me was the overriding taste in the crisps, it gave them a hint of Quavers although was not nearly as nice as those!
The texture is another thing I shall complain about. With these crisps Sainsbury's have attempted to copy the hard and crunchy texture of Kettle crisps, although I must admit they have failed miserably. The crisps are hard but they have an almost stale texture which I wasn't impressed with at all, they aren't very crunchy in my opinion but strangely chewy after the initial crunch which is not a pleasant sensation at all.
I'm not impressed, I'm really not. While these crisps are supposed to be of premium quality I have to say I've eaten tastier Tesco Value crisps! Nothing redeems them; the flavours are masked by the awful greasiness and the texture is absolutely appalling. There is rather a lot of flavouring powder on the crisps but this doesn't really turn into actual flavouring while eating the crisps, it simply meant I got a rather dry mouth and ended up having to have a glass of water after deciding I really wasn't going to eat any more.
A 50g serving of these crisps contains 237 calories and an amazingly high 13.9g of fat, which accounts somewhat for the greasy flavour. Personally if these had been better then I wouldn't have minded spending all those calories, but they were awful and I feel cheated. Never again will I be sucked in by Sainsbury's Taste the Difference crisps as they always manage to be disappointing!
Summary: Appalling crisps from Sainsbury's - go for Tesco Value, they're better!
