Smiths Bacon Flavoured Fries
Advantages: Tastes Great, Smells Great
Disadvantages: Additives, Small Packets
Some pub-based snacks are better than others, and for every delicious pack of 'Scampi Flavoured Fries', you've got your less than tasty (in my opinion at least) 'Cheese Flavoured Moments' (see both of my previous reviews). It's no coincidence that I chose to name-drop the aforementioned crisps - they are both products of the Smith's pub range - alongside the snack which I am reviewing today, 'Bacon Flavoured Fries'. I normally like bacon flavoured crisps, and Pork Scratchings are *OK* too - but I often get put off by the hairy bits you find in them - so I'm always on the lookout for tasty alternatives.
Described as a "Delicious Bacon Flavour Cereal Snack", the crisps cost around 65p (depending on which pub you go to) for the rather small 28g pack. Said packet is of a deep red colour, with a rather bland yellowy label featuring a photo of the crisps. The Fries themselves look very similar to 'Frazzles' (also a Smith's crisp) - although they are a little thinner, and not quite as colourful. The smell is delicious, with quite an authentic bacon-like aroma which is very appetizing. The crisps are quite frankly delicious - lovely and crunchy, and much nicer than Frazzles as they don't seem quite as salty - 'Moreish' is definitely a word I would use to describe these beauties, and they're just as good as the Scampi Fries.
In terms of their ingredients, the crisps contain;
Sunflower Oil, Maize, Rice, Soya Protein Grits, Seasoning [flavouring, whey powder (from milk), Lactose (from milk), Flavour Enchancer (monosodium glutomate), Hydrolysed Soya Protein, Wheat Rusk], Salt, Yeast Powder, and Colours (Sulphite Ammonia Caramel).
From looking at the above list, it's instantly obvious that these aren't healthy crisps - Monosodium glutamate (that nasty chemical which keeps you eating) is generally frowned upon, and there are a few other additives which aren't too good for you. That said, on this occasion I'm prepared to turn a blind eye, as these replica-pig-wonders are just so tasty.
In conclusion, Smith's Bacon Flavoured Fries are a delicious snack which I would certainly eat again - they're everything I look for in a crisp - crunchy, tasty, and very addictive. The only downside is the fact that the packets are so small - although it's probably a good thing that they are, as given free reign, I'm sure I could eat a massive amount of these!
