Advantages: flavour, texture - amazing crisps!
Disadvantages: price and exclusivity
I have to admit to being a bit of a bacon crisp lover. I will never eat bacon itself - so I let myself splurge on the crisps. One of my favourites is the Bacon Flavour Fries by The Smith's Snackfood Company.
The crisps are available in single bags at most newsagents (the one near me is always in constant supply luckily) and they cost between 55-70p depending on what the shop decides to price them. I have been unable to find them in multi packs at supermarkets, but I am aware that for £11.70 you can pick up a pack of 24 on Amazon. It is quite a big expense for crisps but I suppose its worth it!
My favourite part of these crisps is that there is only 130 calories per bag - making it not even an 8th of your daily calorie intake. I often end up eating 2 or more in one go - oopsie.
Usually, I go for the crisps that are easier to find in the supermarket whilst on my weekly food shop. This means I buy Bacon Rashers more than these lovelies, although the Bacon Rashers tend to taste very faintly of bacon, they are also quite 'air filled' and they do not feed my addiction enough for my liking. Which is why I am now incredibly pleased I can buy the packs from Amazon.
The packaging of these crisps looks like it hasn't been changed much since they were first made. I think this gives it a good edge compared to all other brands trying to look as modern as possible. As you can see from the image, the pack is brown/red and holds a yellow band around the middle. The band holds on the back all of the nutritional information, ingredients and other bits and pieces. On the front is the name of the crisps and an image in blue ink which I believe is inside a room with wine and beer on the table, along with the crisps. There is an image of the crisps and underneath it says 'Cereal snack with that extra crunchy bacon taste'.
Bacon flavoured Fries taste very bacon-y and meaty as they should. The smell of bacon when you first open the pack is very strong which I adore as it makes my mouth water (I'm surprised I don't dribble!). The texture is quite crunchy and not stale like other brands, you can really taste that these are made with only the best ingredients too. I know a lot of people prefer these to taste identical to a rash of bacon, but I like that these do not taste exactly like eating bacon, I think its more due to the texture as I do not like fried bacon one bit!
I also like how these crisps are low in fat, despite being incredibly tasty. Obviously if you eat loads at once then the whole point of a little fat is blown out the window - but in moderation they are perfect (maybe I should take note of this myself ha!). Most crisps you find that are low in fat, also lack flavour so these are a big YES in my cupboard.
Of course a bag of crisps will not fill you up, but in a lunch bag or as a quick snack they are fine. They satisfy your taste buds and temporarily stop your stomach growling at you. I do tend to eat these along with a bit of fruit (the taste does not mix well together so make sure to drink water in between - bacon & banana isn't a flavour you will be seeing on the shelf soon!).
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who likes crisps with a strong flavour but low fat content. I have to admit to being a little annoyed that they aren't well recognized and sold in supermarkets, but I think the exclusivity that comes with these crisps is part of the reason I enjoy them so much. They are a lot better than supermarket brought meaty wonders - Tesco's own and bacon rashers have nothing on these crisps.
