Savoury Selection Bacon Fries
When in the pub yesterday after a football match, I was feeling a bit peckish and brought a pack of these. I hadn't ever had these before as I hadn't seen them in a shop so they were completely new to me. I brought them for 45p, but I'm not really sure if this is good value or not for these crisps. But I do know it is around the same price as Frazzles. However, I am rather partial to a packet of Frazzles or a supermarket brand so I was pretty sure I would like these - a lot! This is what I thought:
These are the people who actually make the crisps. I will be honest, I hadn't actually heard of them before yesterday, but they also make scampi flavoured crisps and were joined with Walkers for a while (not sure if they still are though). They have been running for a long time and (though I hadn't even heard of them) seem to be a trusted brand.
I think it is supposed to looks like an "olden days" packet of ceusps and it does suceed in that. On the front the colours are mostly a browny-purple, blue and and really weak yellow. I won't spend forever explaining the design etc. as you can see it in the pictures above.
And though a lot of people have told me they like the "old fashioned" look, I actually don't really like it much! For me it it much to busy and I prefer the more plain Frazzle look. However, it doesn't really matter much what the packet looks like as it is more about what is inside for me!
2/5 stars for me. It has all the info needed on it, but I just don't like it to be honest! It looks boring and unappealing!

Once you open the crisps (which isn't too hard though kids might struggle) a strong smell hits you. It isn't really a bacon smell but a more artificial bacon smell. It is really hard to explain but if you have ever smelt a frazzle or the supermarket alternitive you will know what I mean. All in all, the smell is very pleasant and leaves you looking forward to what is lurking inside.
A real 5/5 stars for a rich, lovely smell that prepares you very well!
I wasn't really looking for much from the crisps to be honest. As long as it tasted like bacon flavoured crisps do, and was a pretty full packet (unlike many which are all air, no crisps!) I would be satisfied. I was also pretty hungry as football can really take it out of you so they needed to be quite filling. I can tell you, I wasn't dissapointed - at all! After you open the packet and look inside, you see a packet which is around 3/4 full of golden and rhubarby coloured crisps. You pick one up and pop it in your mouth and a great taste goes through your taste buds. On some of the fries a lot of the bacon flavouring can be seen (and tasted) and on others they are a bit bland. None the less, they taste really great and don't leave any aftertastes etc.
4/5 stars for the taste. My only complaints? It is mostly because the packet of crisps get battered and bashed around a lot, the flavouring will either end up with a whole load on about 5 fies, or around the foil inside the packet. Therefore meaning you end up with some pretty bland un-flavoursome bacon fries, some overpowering bacon fries and a whole load round the packet! This can be annoying at times, but it is the same with frazzles and every other packet of crisps like these, so it isn't hard to forgive really!
I would really recommend these, but I don't find them much different to frazzles and they are much easier to find. If your aren't doing great on the money front, it is also easy to find a supermarket cheap version (Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Co-op etc. etc.) which is nearly as nice, though not quite I will admit. But they are really nice and if you spot them around and about I would say give them a go!
4/5 stars overall. The problem with the bacon flavour distrubution and the ugly packet let it down partly, but otherwise it is a great packet of crisps! For some reason though, I prefer Frazzles though ..!
Would I recommend? Yep, I definetly would!
