Advantages: Very tasty, low calories

Disadvantages: The taste is too strong for some

I'm a sucker for all things retro. If I ate it when I was wee, then I'll still buy it today. Chipsticks were one of my favourites when I was younger, and now I'm just after polishing off a bag. It's nice to be able to introduce your children to something that you used to get when you were small.

I got my Chipsticks in a multipack bag from Tescos. They were in a section of 3 for £3 brands so I popped an 8 pack bag into the trolley. When my little boy saw them as I unpacked the shopping he asked what they were (and next question as every mother knows... 'Can I have some?') And I told them that these were Chipsticks, but he might not like them as they were salt and vinegar flavoured, and being only three and a half he finds salt and vinegar is a little sharp for him.

He did the good old 'Please mummy' so I opened a packet and put a few on a plate for him. He sat on the sofa munching away and eventually had eaten the handful that I had given him. 'Those were fizzy crisps mummy' he said. I had to admit it was a good description.

What you get when you open a bag is a large handful of chip-shaped crisps, or Maize and potato snacks as they are referred to on the bag. I lifted the bag to tell you the weight, but the weight is not to be found anywhere. Now, I'm not Nadine Coyle, so I dont carry kitchen scales around with me, but I have read that they are about 25g per bag. They are fairly drenched in a vinegar flavouring which is really apparent from the moment you open the bag. I find this really tasty, but it wouldn't be for everyone.

My gripe with them is that they are just so crumbly. I've just finished a packet for my lunch and there are crumbs everywhere; all over the plate I had here, all over the desk and my knees. Admittedly I am a messy eater, but chipsticks are a little on the excessive side when it comes to crumbs.

Although the bag is just like you would remember when you were small, the crisps say Smith's on the bag, but they are actually produced by Walkers now. At only 107 calories per bag, they are a good option for someone who wants a quick snack but is also minding their weight. They are also suitable for coeliacs and for vegetarians. I didn't realise this before, so now I can buy a pack to have in when my friend comes to visit as she is coeliac and it always stresses me out when I have to find food that I can serve for her.

I love them, my little boy loves them... will you love them?

Summary: One of my old favourites
