Snack-a-Jacks Berry Flavour
Advantages: Taste great, very sweet, low in fat, suitable for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs.
Disadvantages: Too more-ish!
Most people who are dieting are familiar with Snack-a-Jacks products: they're low fat corn and rice snacks that come in a variety of flavours and come in either snack packets (like crisp bags) or a larger flat cakes which you can cover in toppings.
I bought my first bag of Berry Flavour Snack-a-Jacks in Sainsbury's for 45p (for a 30g bag) and then a few days later bought a six-pack (each bag 25g) for £2.00 as they were so nice!
When you first open the bag there's a sweet berry smell which makes you want to dive straight in! Some of the bags look quite flat and I expected to see lots of crumbs and broken ones but I was surprised that most were still intact although you still get a few bits at the bottom.
The individual snacks are more-or-less the same size as shown on the bag, about an inch and a half in diameter, and they're the same colour too, mainly a light pink with highlights of yellow. The only difference with the picture and the product is that they're not all such a regular shape. Some are quite twisted and sort of remind me of prawn crackers in the way they're curled over. Some also have a bit of a shine to them, like they've been glazed.
Now for the taste! They're very sweet and actually quite more-ish which I think sort of defeats the objective of having a low fat snack because I want to eat more than one pack (when I bought the six-pack I actually ate two packs in succession before I restrained myself!)
Their flavour is definitely berries, mixed berries though as they're not quite strawberry and not quite blackcurrant either. They sort of remind me of those berry jelly sweets. The ones with the darker colouring seem to have stronger flavouring than the others.
They have a very, very crunchy texture but it's not dry, I didn't need to worry too much about having a drink while I ate them.
They're suitable for vegetarians, coeliacs and contain no artificial colours or sweeteners. And the ingredients show that they're suitable for vegans too.
Overall, these make a great snack if you're dieting but craving something really sweet and the berry flavour is something a bit different to most other snacks.
Rice, maize (with the germ removed), sugar, berry flavour [juice concentrates (blackcurrant, strawberry, raspberry), flavourings], vegetable concentrates, sunflower oil, soya lecithin, salt.
