Tasty And Filling

Advantages: Have a nice mix of flavours and textures.
Disadvantages: Chocolate layer too thin.Don't expect them to taste exactly like a Snicker's bar.
I saw these Mcvities Snickers Flapjack in my local supermarket recently and decided to buy them to try as I really like oat flapjacks and I have a real sweet tooth. If I have to reach for a sugary snack I like to eat something that has a bit of substance and which has healthy aspects to it's ingredients. I hoped that this product would satisfy my hunger, my sweet tooth and also allow me to compromise by providing nutritious nuts and oats whilst I'm getting my chocolaty satisfaction!
These flapjacks are designed to replicate the taste of the Snickers confectionary bar. They combine the major flavours of the bar with the traditional flapjack recipe. Although I like Snickers bars they are not my favourite sweet on the market so I had no expectations about how these flapjacks should taste.
The product comes as a pack of five individual flapjacks. They are individually wrapped, contained in a cardboard case and then covered with a main wrapper. Product information is printed on both the outer wrapper and each individual wrapper. There is a helpful easy access guideline to an adult's daily nutrition in regards to these flapjacks on the front corner of the packet. On the back of the wrapper there is a list of full ingredients, a more detailed nutritional information chart, contact information and more.
As far as the ingredients these flapjacks are free from any artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. They are also suitable for vegetarians. Rolled oats is their biggest ingredient followed by 12% portion of peanuts. They contain peanuts, milk, soya and gluten and may contain unspecified nuts and egg. Each flapjack provides 172 calories and 10g of fat.
Each bar is 34g in size and they are the perfect shape and weight for a child's lunchbox or for work breaks. They are a couple of inches long and about 2 centimetres deep. Each wrapper is easy to open as the ends are jagged so you can tear along a strip. The flapjacks look really tasty. They are a block of moist, sticky oats mixed up with golden brown peanuts. The top of the flapjack has a thin coating of chocolate and the ends of the flapjack are coated in the wispy strands of melted chocolate where it has been applied.
I find the taste of the flapjacks to be really mouth watering. I wouldn't particularly associate the flavour with that of a Snicker's bar though. The flavour of the roasted peanuts are really the only thing reminiscent of the confectionary bar. The flapjack is a premium oat flapjack though. The caramel and golden syrup which bind the oats together has a rich, sugary flavour which is really satisfying. The roasted nuts look wonderful as they are a more toasty golden brown colour and stand out against the fawn coloured oats. The nuts are also succulent and chewy. Often in a Snickers bar I struggle to enjoy the peanuts as they are often dry and hard to chew. The nuts in these flapjacks though are of a perfect texture. The chocolate topping is sweet and creamy. I would like the chocolate layer to be a little bit thicker however as it is almost a crisp layer because it's so thin.
The flapjacks are fairly filling and each mouthful feels like real food. The texture of all the ingredients combined is very pleasant. I particularly like the chewy but ultra moist oats. The roasted nuts have a beautiful earthy flavour but don't taste overdone or burned. There are half nut pieces right down the length of the flapjack and it's a joy to discover a piece of nut in each mouthful. I like the way the chocolate adds a cocoa rich hint and extra creamy flavour too.
Overall I would say the quality of these is quite high but on my third bar (yes, I'm being greedy and eating the whole pack myself!) I found that the bottom of the flapjack had a few black, solid burned oats stuck to the bottom. I had to remove these prior to eating as they were as hard as metal. They looked horrible too. However, I'm willing to accept this as a one off error in processing rather than a widespread quality issue.
I would definitely buy these again as they are very flavoursome, filling and satisfying. I actually prefer them to the Snickers confectionary bar. They cost me £1.30 for the packet which I'd be happy to spend again.
Summary: Delicious and filling. I enjoy eating them!
