Advantages: quick and easy to prepare, good value, rich and tasty, versitile
Disadvantages: high in fat and calories
When I am off work I try and make a bit of an effort to have a nice breakfast and today popped to my local Tesco express store and purchased a packet of their own brand all butter croissants. The croissants came in a pack of four and cost just £1.14 which I thought was pretty good value as you can pay more than this for just one in a coffee shop or café.
The croissants packaging is quite basic but functional and consists of a clear plastic tray wrapped in a thin clean plastic wrapper. On the front of the wrapper you can find the name of the product, the Tesco logo and some basic nutritional information. On the back of the packet you can find more detailed product information storage instructions, allergy advice, ingredients listings, nutritional information, freezing guidelines and heating instructions. It also states that the croissants are suitable for vegetarians.
As these croissants are made with butter they are not the lightest in calories, as a result I only ever eat these as a treat. A single croissant, typically weighing 44g contains the following nutritional information:
Calories - 180 kcal
Protein - 3.7g
Carbohydrate - 18.9g
Fat - 9.8g
To prepare the croissant you simply need to place them onto a baking tray and heat in the centre of a pre-heated oven for 4-5 minutes at 200C/400F or Gas Mark 6. My oven is fan assisted so I gave the croissants 4 minutes which seemed to work perfectly well leaving them with a crisp outside and hot steamy centre. They also make your kitchen smell delicious as if you have made them from scratch.
These croissants are in the usual knot shape and have a lovely golden brown outside with a flaky light inside. Croissants can be served on their own or with various fillings both sweet and savoury. I served these croissants for breakfast so simply tore them open and topped with butter and jam which was delicious. But you could also serve them with savoury filling like cheese, ham, chicken and salad they are a blank canvass so anything goes.
I was really impressed with these croissants, they are a nice size and are very light and flaky in texture. You can certainly tell that they are made with butter as they have a lovely richness to them which make them taste delicious. In my opinion these are great croissants which are fantastic quality, great value and very versatile to make a quick tasty meal. I would certainly recommend them and will be repurchasing.
Summary: A great value, versitile croissant from Tesco.
