“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Cakes „
As I said in my Caterpillar Cake review I was brought 2 cakes for my birthday, this is the second one. Again it was a Tesco one but this time it was a Large Chocolate Celebration cake. With all that chocolate chocolate butter-cream its a chocolate lovers dream!!!!!
The cake comes in a large square purple box with light and dark purple swirls over it. The majority of the lid is clear allowing you to get a clear view of the delicious chocolate cake inside. The box simply opens at the side allowing you to slide the cake out easily on the sturdy silver tray it come on. In the top left hand corner of the box is a gift tag shape with the words Tesco Large Chocolate Celebration Cake written in it in darker purple lettering. This is repeated along the side of the box along with a picture of a slice of the cake on a plate. This picture is on both sides of the box and on one end of it. On the opposite end of the box is all the nutritional information in detail and a huge long list of ingredients which I wont bore you with, however this cake is entirely vegetarian friendly!!!! Not animal products in sight. Along with the ingredients it also displays allergy advise informing you the cake contains milk, wheat, gluten, eggs and soya, whilst this cake contains no nut (Yuk!!!!) it cannot be guaranteed that it s was prepared in a nut free environment. There is also a small description of he cake which says "Chocolate sponge cake, filled and covered with chocolate ganache. Hand decorated with milk and white chocolate curls, butter-cream piping and milk, white and dark chocolate star"
The Cake is basically as the description says above. It consists of 3 large round chocolate sponges divided with thick chocolate butter-cream. This is then covered in further butter-cream/ ganache. The entire edge (end of the cake when cut) is coved in white and milk curls of chocolate and there is further butter-cream piping around the entire edge of the cake. It is then finished off with dark, milk and white chocolate stars. The cake is absolutely delicious, very sickly but in a good way. There is plenty of chocolate and the sponges are lovely and moist, not dry at all. The cake also contains no artificial flavours or colours, the only flavour is chocolate!!!!!
The cake itself is attractively decorated and nicely presented in the box on a silver board, making servicing very easy!!!!
Nutritional Information per twentieth of the cake
275 calories (ouch)
This cake is supposed to serve 20 people, although it is a large cake I am not sure whether you would quite get 20 pieces out of it, they would be very small!!!! The cake costs around £6.50 which for the size of cake you get is very good value for money!!!!.
Although I had this cake for my birthday it could be used to celebrate any occasion as it does not specifically indicate that it is for birthdays only!!!!! Being a chocolate lover this cake was perfect, unless you do not like chocolate this cake is ideal for everyone and suitable for the whole family.
Large cake would serve several people (not sure about 20 though)
Very very chocolaty (Yum)
Nicely decorated and could be used for any occasion
Suitable for the whole family
If I had to choose one it would probably be the calorie content, this is certainly not one for a dieter, however it is only your birthday once a year!!!!!
We bought this as a birthday cake - which was a darned good idea.
Listed as a celebration cake it should have its name changed to "Birthday cake" as the big white chocolate "Happy birthday" scrawl kinda spoils it being a anniversary cake (although I would happily eat that off......)
OK that aside (the name) the cake is a very generous sized chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate cream filling and coating that is simply light and rich at the same time. Regardless of it saying it would provide 20 portions, we found it so creamy and rich even our most prolific sweet tooth could manage half of that! So you could easily get 30 or more portions out.
Primarily made of milk chocolate the shavings on the edge are a mix of milk, white and dark chocolate, and sprinkled on the top are numeral smaller white chocolate stars and some larger (varying in size) milk chocolate ones joined quite nicely with the "Happy birthday" looking hand piped in white chocolate.
This is quite a big cake for the price and range.... most 'celebration' cakes come up about half the size and make you feel a little 'cheated' with plain icing and jam filling. This one most definitely doesn't. Chocolate to the extreme, creamy and basically every chocoholics day dream!
So what you waiting for? Don't let the Happy Birthday put you off buying this delicious cake for a special occasion. Just don't let the kids catch you scooping off the chocolate....
Cake was £7.49 for "supposedly" 20 portions
