I'm currently trying to loose some weight and have embarked on the Weight Watchers plan, therefore I'm always on the lookout for tasty treats that aren't too laden with fat, calories and as per the Weight Watchers system, 'points' too. I spotted these little cake slices in my local Tesco Express, and at only 1 point each, I thought I'd give them a try.
Tesco Light Choices Date and Walnut Cake Slices cost 98p for 6 slices which works out at roughly 16p per slice. They contain 75 calories per slice, 0.3g of fat, of which only 0.1g is saturated, so all in all they really are a healthy choice for a dessert or snack.
The slices are a rich dark golden brown colour, with a lovely sticky outer layer dotted with chopped nuts, sultanas and dates and do look quite delicious. They do sound really tasty if you like that sort of thing, but, surprisingly they are not. When you bite into the slice, it has a very dry, spongy texture, and they are quite tastless. The fruit contained in the cake has a slight synthetic taste, not at all appealing. There is a slight hint of nutmeg, but this is the only flavour that tastes as it should.
No matter how low fat, or low calorie this cake is, I could not bring myself to sample another. I will not purchase this product again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. There are much nicer and tastier low calorie treats out there, take for instance the Weight Watchers cake slices, which are delicious, moreish and a great price too.
A big thumbs down for Tesco Light Choices Date and Walnut Cake Slices, spend your money on something else, perhaps something that tastes nice!
