      Very helpful

A tasty, low fat garlic bread.

Nobody enjoys being on a diet. Not really, anyway. And that is the honest truth. I'm a 'Weight Watcher', which officially isn't really classed as a diet - more of a 'way of life'. In just over two years I've completely turned around my eating habits and taught myself to select healthier options over those that are absolutely dreadful for me. It's been a long process, but I've found that there are products out there that are aimed at people like me to give a helping hand. Everyone loves a treat, right? I do! Garlic bread is a complete and utter sin when it comes to dieting. However, the big Mr.T has kindly created a product to soothe my sinful ways and give me what I crave in the form of these 'Light Choices Garlic Bread Slices'.

Light Choices is a range of products created by the clever people at Tesco as a competitor for 'Weight Watcher's brand products. Products in the Light Choices range have been created to meet the needs of those trying to lower their calorie and fat intakes. If you're looking for a healthier option to your regular meals, ingredients or treats - then look no further. Light Choices has a whole range of products throughout Tesco stores to substitute those highly calorific, fat laden items you usually purchase. If you're watching your weight, trying to shift a few pounds, or just trying to feel less guilty about what you feed yourself, Light Choices from Tesco is for you!

These 'Light Choices Garlic Bread Slices' can only be found in Tesco stores as the Light Choices range has been specially created by Tesco. So don't go looking for these yummies in any other store - 'cause you won't find them! They're to be found in the chiller section of the store, down the aisle that is home to the fresh Italian products. In my Tesco store, they are on the bottom shelf of the chiller, amongst a whole host of other different garlic bread options, below the chilled ready prepared pizzas. Warning: don't go getting tempted and choosing a fatty option instead. Be strong!

As far as garlic bread goes, these 'Light Choices Garlic Bread Slices' are priced decently. At £1.30 for 9 slices of low fat garlic bread, I think this is a steal. Other full fat garlic breads are either the same price or more, so for a 'diet' food product the price is brilliant. £1.30 for 9 slices works out at just under 15p per slice. This means that adding a portion of low fat, full flavour garlic bread to your main meal comes in at just under 30p. Great value!

Te packaging for these 'Light Choices Garlic Bread Slices' is pretty simple and not overly faffy. The outer packaging of this product is simply a sealed plastic/film bag-type packaging, which is mostly transparent allowing you to see the product within. To the right hand side of the outer packaging is a wide white translucent banner displaying the Tesco Light Choices text logo in a pale blue colour. Upon this banner you will also find a picture of a few cooked slices of the garlic bread, along with the product name, a little about the benefits of choosing this product health-wise, and the nutritional information 'at a glance' box. The front is also printed with the 'freezable product' logo, the weight and the best before date. The back of the outer packaging hosts all the important information, including ingredients list, dietary/allergy information and a full nutritional information chart. Here you will also find the cooking instructions, freezing instructions and contact details for the company. The 9 slices of garlic bread are laid in a clear plastic tray. The tray is pretty flimsy so be careful you don't drop the slices all over the floor when you're sliding the tray out of the outer packaging.

Cooking the 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' really couldn't be easier. To cook your garlic slices under the grill simply place the chosen amount of slices under the preheated grill and cook for 1 - 2 minutes on a medium heat. You can also cook the garlic slices in the oven by placing the chosen amount of slices on a baking tray and cooking at 200 degrees / gas mark 6 for 5 - 6 minutes. Easy peasy!

To look at, it's hard to tell the difference between these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' and regular garlic bread slices. This is definitely a good thing, as you can trick yourself and your eating partners into thinking these are full fat normal garlic slices. The slices are individual pieces o diagonally cut french baguette type white bread and are definitely a good size for a diet product, no scrimping on portion size here! Each slice has a generous spread of yellowish garlic flavoured butter on one side, with a sprinkling of green herbs. Uncooked, these garlic slices look like any other uncooked garlic bread - not exactly appetising, but not unpleasant. Once cooked, the 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' look absolutely delicious. The outside of the slices turn a yummy shade of golden brown and look crispy and delicious. The garlic butter from the top of the slices melts during cooking, and coats the top of each slice with a yummy looking golden yellow buttery appearance. I'm always excited to tuck into these slices as soon as they're removed from the oven as they appear so appetising (and smell flipping gorgeous!).

I love the smell of garlic, and the smell of cooking garlic is even more divine. The only time garlic is unpleasant is when it's lingering on someone's breath the following day - eugh! I did assume these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices'wouldn't have much of a garlic scent as they are a 'diet'product, however I was pleasantly suprised to find these slices weren't lacking in garlic scent at all! The garlic scent given off by these slices is apparent as soon as you open the packaging. That familiar, inviting smell tickles your nostrils and is enough to make your tummy rumble in anticipation! The garlic smell was strong, but not overpowering, from these slices. When I say strong, I don't mean this in a negative way - infact much the opposite. The smell is delicious, and turns almost into a heavenly temptation during cooking. The smell of garlic from these slices filled the kitchen during cooking, letting me know that these slices were not lacking in garlic at all!

I half expected these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' to be lacking in flavour, as they are a diet product. However, I was proven wrong in a big way. There is a good amount of garlic butter on each slice which in turn gives more than enough flavour. Each individual slice is always bursting with a wonderfully garlicy taste, so much so that you would never tell that this was a low fat product. It'd be easy to pass these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' as regular garlic slices to non-dieters as they taste exactly the same as regular garlic bread (so feel free to fool your kids and partners!) Once cooked, the slices are crisp on the outside, and soft and chewy in the middle with a wonderfully fresh texture. The garlic butter on each slice is a generous enough portion to cover the surface of each slice entirely, so once cooked the garlic slices are saturated with the delicious garlic butter flavour, yet manage to avoid being greasy. Delicious!

Another good thing about these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' is that they can be frozen (and used within one month). The slices are fresh when purchased, therefore have a short shelf life, so freezing them makes them last much longer! (I don't think anyone could eat 9 garlic slices alone within a couple of days hehe!)

For me, these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' are fantastic. They allow me to have that little treat with my pasta dishes without feeling like I've cheated myself. They also allow me to have the same meals as my girlfriend and family when they have regular garlic bread, without me breaking my diet. I owe these 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' a lot. They've saved me many a-time and provided me with all the garlicy, bready goodness that I could want. The slices are a decent size, so 2 is always enough. The bread is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside after baking. The flavour is strong and tasty without being overpowerful. Everything you could ask for in a garlic bread slice, with much less fat and calories than a regular garlic slice. Even my girlfriend enjoys these slices if she has run out of her own regular cheese and garlic bread slices. A winner in our household. 'Light Choices Garlic Slices' are here to stay!
