“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Snacks „
Being on a diet can be hard, especially when that 'diet' is actually a new, healthy way of eating and living, and is to now be a way of life. Finding healthy, and tasty, items to snack on can be almost impossible when looking around a supermarket - so much temptation with junk, too many offers leering at you and all the 'good for you' stuff hidden out of sight. If you have the patience to look hard enough (or read someone's reviews that looks for you..ie. ME!) you can stumble across little gems like these 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' that could just save you from your snack time cravings.
'Light Choices' is a range of products created by Tesco for their customers that may be watching their weight, trying to cut down on junk food items, or simply making a switch from their usual high calorie/fat products to a lower content alternative. Therefore, 'Light Choices' products are only available within Tesco stores. The 'Light Choices' range also provides a 'Weight Watchers' points value on the packaging which is fantastic for all those Weight Watchers out there (like me). Each major supermarket now seems to carry a similar range of products, however the 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' that I am reviewing can only be found in Tesco stores - so don't go looking for them in Asda *wink*. They are to be found in the same aisle as the breakfast items, along the section that carries the cereal bars. My Tesco store carries them on the bottom shelf, so they are pretty easy to miss if you are not looking for them.
The 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' come with a rather fabulous price tag of 99p for 15 single raisin slices. It's rare to find a multipack snack product on sale for under £1 these days, especially when it comes to healthier options, so these really are a steal!
The outer packaging sealed bag of this product is predominantly white in colour and carries the pale blue 'Tesco Light Choices' recognisable logo. This colour scheme appears to be used throughout the whole of the 'Light Choices' range making it easier to spot the products if you're looking for them. The front of the packet states the name of the product, set within a green banner, and beneath this is a brief description of what the product is: "Deliciously baked biscuits bursting with raisins, currants and apple". There is a large picture of the product itself along with a 'nutritional value at a glance' banner and the weight of the product. The packaging is fairly plain to look at in comparison to the usual cereal and snack bars found in the same section. The back of the packaging is similarly as plain, and holds all the full nutritional information, ingredients list, allergy information, contact details and barcode.
Upon opening the outer packaging you will find 5 individually wrapped servings of the 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices', each packet holding 3 slices. The servings are packaged in transparent sealed plastic for freshness, allowing you to see the product within.
To look at, these raisin crispy slices do look pretty appetising. I'm not going to say they look as attractive as a large slab of chocolate fudge cake looks, but for a healthy snack, they do look good enough to eat (unlike a lot of health food these days!). Each slice is a golden brown in colour and the raisins are visably scattered throughout each slice. You can see just from looking at them that there has been no scrimping on the flavour or ingredient content as there is an abundance of fruit within each slice.
In all honesty, the raisin crispy slices smell absolutely delicious! I'm always dubious about how good a healthy snack can be, but just upon opening the packet you can smell the wonderful baked aroma of the slices that never fails to make me want more. It's a sort of cinnamony scent, somewhat reminding me of the scent of a baked apple and cinnamon pie. That wonderful baking pastry aroma with a sweet, faintly spiced, tingle in the nostrils that is enough to make you salivate. Absolutely divine!
The taste of the 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' is not a let down either! Upon biting into the slice, the biscuity-pastry has that cirpsy crunch, followed by a melt in the mouth baked sensation. It reminds me of eating the crust off a baked sweet pie. Delicious! The sweet, moreish taste of the raisins and apple within comes through straight after and fills your mouth with the most delicious of flavours. A cinnamon-y treat that tastes exactly as you imagine a fruit pie to taste when you can smell it baking. There's just something wonderfully warming and comforting about the flavour of these slices that makes you feel like you're really treating yourself to something wonderful.
In my opinion these 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' are fantastic. Not only are they complete and utter value for money, ringing in at only 99p per packet (19.8p per serving of 3 slices!!), but they are low in fat, low in calories and healthy too! It's hard to find healthy snacks that have any amount of flavour, but these slices are bursting with a delicious cinnamony-raisin baked taste and never fail to hit the spot with my sweet tooth! Ontop of being healthy AND tasty, these slices also fill a gap! Unfortunately I am usually left still hungry after eating healthy snacks due to the small amount you generally get as a serving, however each serving is 3 slices, and they are rather filling and leave me feeling satisfied and put my food cravings at bay. I'd definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for something to graze on, whetner you're watching your weight or not. These 'Light Choices Raisin Crispy Slices' are also a hit with my younger brother, so would be a great addition to any child's packed lunch or just as a snack after school.
The only problem I have is not with the product itself, but more how misleading Tesco can be! The 'Light Choices' products always come with a Weight Watchers points count on the back of the packet. This packet, at a glance, states that there is 1.5 WW points in the product. However if you look closer, the 1.5 WW points is actually per slice. NOT per serving (remember, the slices come wrapped as individual servings of 3 slices). This can be very misleading as simply at a glance you assume there is 1.5 WW points per 3 slices. However, after working the nutritional information out with my WW calculator in the cereal bar aisle, I found there to be 2.5 WW points per serving - still very low and acceptable for such a filling product. So, just beware when looking at 'Light Choices' products that the 'at a glance' point count is for a serving, not per piece.
Overall, a delicious baked healthy snack that can fill a hole or cure sweet tooth cravings without giving you cavities or extra inches!
