Advantages: Taste fresh and tasty, good packaging, good amount of crackers in the bag

Disadvantages: Watch the fat content

I was having some friends over a couple of weeks ago as it was my turn to do the entertaining and to cook a meal. I normally tend to stick with what I know, the old classics such as a lasagne or a spaghetti bolognaise however I decided that it was about time for a change and so decided to cook a stir fry and as I had some party treats such as the Chinese snack selection left in the freezer I thought that it would all go together well. I went along to my local Tesco and brought all of my ingredients and whilst having a look around I decided that a bag of prawn crackers would compliment the dish well. Having never brought them before there were a couple of options available to me but I decided to stick with the Tescos own brand and so popped them in my trolley and crossed my fingers that they would be ok!

The bag of prawn crackers cost me 65 pence which I did not think was a bad price. They are normally something that gets thrown in as a freebie as we have spent so much at my local Chinese so I don't really know of a price to compare them with anyway! I found the product by the crisps and snack section and they were quite easy to spot on the shelves.

I would describe the packaging of these prawn crackers as quite vibrant. The bag features pink, blue and black colours. There is the Tesco logo at the top of the bag followed by the name of the product. There is also a picture of the prawn crackers which always helps in my opinion as you get to almost see the product before you buy it. On the reverse of the bag is where you find all the usual nutritional information as well as ingredient listings and allergy information; the prawn crackers contain egg and shell fish and are not guaranteed to be free from nuts

When I came to open the bag and popped them into a bowl I noticed how fresh the crackers felt, they were really hard and not at all soft which I would expect, once opened the bag will need to be clipped together or the remainder of the crackers will not stay fresh. So my guests came over and all that was left was the all important taste test...

The first thing that not just I but my friends noticed was how great and crispy these prawn crackers were, they were so crunchy to eat! You could also really notice the flavour of the prawns coming out which I was impressed with. The ingredients are quite basic for these prawn crackers, they really only include flour, vegetable oil, egg, salt and o course prawn. I was also impressed with the fact that these prawn crackers did not taste to fatty or greasy as ones from the take away often to taste a bit fatty to me where as these Tesco ones were not at all greasy. Even if you choose to make your own crackers, as they need to be fried it is hard to escape that fatty taste so I was really impressed with these ones!

The prawn crackers are slightly smaller in size compared with the ones that you might get from your local take away but this does not make any difference to the taste, they were really edible and by the end of the night the bowl that I had served them in was completely empty so they must have tasted ok!

The nutritional value of the prawn crackers is as follows: (Per serving)

Calories ~ 115
Sugar ~ 2g
Fat ~ 8g
Saturates ~ 3g
Salt ~ 0.4g

As you can see from the above figures this product is not the healthiest snack in the world but for a one off they are not so bad. You do have to watch the fat content, this being due to the fact that the prawn crackers are put in oil.

In summary I was really impressed with the quality of this product. You get a generous amount in the bag and the quality of them is really good. They taste really fresh and have a real crunch to them. They complimented my meal really well so I was really pleased. The only thing that makes me wary it that the calorie and fat content is a little high but everything in moderation!

4 out of 5 from me.

Thanks for reading.

Summary: Really worth giving a go! Recomended.
