When I first saw these Toffee Iced Tarts in Tesco, it brought back a child hood memory. I had to stay for school dinners and one of my favourite puddings was a toffee tart with hot custard. As soon as I saw these in Tesco, I knew I had to try them. They are not exactly the same, but they're not far off it either.
Tesco's Toffee Iced Tarts come in a box of six and cost £1 only, which is great value. They are made with a lovely, sweet and crumbly shortcrust pastry. This is filled with a moist, toffee flavoured sponge and a toffee sauce. It is then topped with toffee flavoured icing. It does sound as if they have gone overboard on the toffee, but as part of a pudding, these tarts are lovely.
There are no instructions for heating the tarts on the box, but I always heat them at gas mark 4 for about 8 minutes. The heat makes the toffee go all soft and runny. I then pour custard on top and it makes a lovely and exceptionally cheap pudding. My kids do like to eat them cold, but they hold no interest for me. I just find them too sweet as a snack on their own.
One toffee tart has 195 calories, which is high for a small tart, but they are rich and very sweet. As a pudding with added custard, this will be even higher, but it's not something you would eat every day.
In my opinion, Tesco's Toffee Iced Tarts, make a lovely base for a very cheap pudding, but I wouldn't eat them on their own. I just find them a bit too sickly, sweet.
I would award them 4 stars.
