Tesco Value bread
Advantages: ummm toasts okay
Disadvantages: taste and texture
If I'm feeling particularly frugal then I will buy Tesco Value Bread, 50p for a full size 800g loaf is good value these days (I remember when it was 17p but it's all relative nowadays). My usual proper branded bread is about £1.40 but only a pound in Aldi.
The wrapper is slightly different to the above picture, it's had the 'Everyday Value' facelift. Instead of a plain white label it has red and brown one with bakery pictures it's still easy to spot though.
For review purposes I've had a look online for the ingredients, I wanted to compare them to the more expensive loaves in this case my favourite at the moment which is Warburtons medium sliced. The ingredients seem similar but the breads taste very different.
Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt, Spirit Vinegar, Soya Flour, Emulsifier (Mono- and Di-Acetyltartaric Esters of Mono- and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids), Rapeseed Oil, Palm Fat, Flour Treatment Agent (Ascorbic Acid)
105 cal per 44g slice
Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt, Vegetable Oil, Soya Flour, Emulsifiers E481, E472e, Preservative Calcium Propionate (added to inhibit mould growth), Flour Treatment Agents Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), E920
96 cal per 40.3g slice
Value slices are smaller than regular bread slices, this is a bonus though when making toasties as they fit better in the machine, they tend to sit in the toaster better too.
The bread is slightly grey/beige in colour it definitely isn't light and airy but has a dense texture to it. It feels stale even on the day of purchase with plenty of days left in date. After a couple of days it starts to break up in the bag still okay to toast but inedible as a sandwich- infact it's not nice for a butty fullstop even at it's freshest. It doesn't mould up any sooner than other breads just seems to go stale and harden up sooner especially around the edges.
What does it taste like?
It's horrid. Bitter and vinegary but okay (only just okay) toasted so that's all I buy it for.
1 star from me
Summary: I wouldn't buy this for sandwiches
