Tesco Value Chocolate Chip Cake Bars

Advantages: cheap and tasty

Disadvantages: none

Every day value chocolate chip cake bars. These are another one of Tesco's increasing range of `everyday value` products. I usually make my own cakes as I find bought ones smaller and more expensive than I can make at home and a little over produced(if you understand my euphemism). However having two boys who seem forever hungry I like to keep a few in the cupboard for when I'm feeling a little lazy. As I have said in other reviews I prefer to not spend money unnecessarily, so thought on seeing these that they would be worth giving them a try. At 50p for a five pack how could I go wrong?

Each cake is individually wrapped keeping them fresher for longer and also making them an ideal addition to an adlib picnic. They are approximately 15cmx3cmx2cm of chocolate chip sponge cake that upon trial were surprisingly sweet and succulent. I wasn't expecting anything amazing and these certainly lived up to my expectations. They are tasty and have plenty of chocolate chips which is a shock as I was expecting perhaps one or two per cake. Although in reality they are quite liberally dispersed. They are great as a backup but I won't be hanging up my apron quite yet!!! I have used them as the base for a chocolate trifle quite successfully and have broken them up to make a rocky road tray bake which was also very tasty.

The packaging is a white cardboard box with the everyday value, no frill packaging with purple writing and a picture of the cake bar emblazoned on the front, much more appealing than the old blue and white value packaging. Each cake is in a transparent plastic bag. All of which is recyclable.

It needs to be kept dry and once opened should be kept in an air tight container. For people with an allergy to nuts you will be pleased to know these are nut free. They are also vegetarian. These are not suitable for home freezing although I have always found them to have a fairly long `use by` date. My sons both enjoy them, they are on par with the more expensive brands and I am extremely happy with both the quality and the exceptional price. All in all a very good bargain and I still continue to purchase them, I definitely recommend them.

They are available at most if not all Tesco stores; however I buy mine at www.tesco.co.uk
