Advantages: Tasty, value for money, great as party buffet food

Disadvantages: Very dry unless eaten with mayo or another dip

I had made my own peppery Scotch Eggs for my granddaughters birthday party last week but thought they might be a little spicy for the younger guests so I decided to buy a couple of packs of mini party eggs to arrange on the buffet around the larger Scotch Eggs.

These have really increased in price since I last bought any a year or two ago so I plumped for a pack of Tesco Value Egg & Bacon Mini Savoury Bites, as I find the worst that can happen to these snacks is that they will be very dry. And lets face it, supermarket Scotch Egg type food is ALWAYS dry so I could not really go wrong with these.

For just 85p I got 12 decent sized Savoury Bites, they are ball shaped and I particularly liked the fact that the balls were not shaped perfectly but were rather knobbly underneath the golden breadcrumbs. A Savoury Bite if you don't know is mashed egg (with bacon added in this instance) inside a sausage meat ball which is then covered in breadcrumbs of the orange type that you would find on food such as fish fingers.

These were much better than I had anticipated, I was correct in the assumption that they would have a dry texture but no more really than any other snack of this type. The egg has been mashed with mayo and each Savoury Bite also contains two or three chunks of bacon which is mixed up in the egg filling. If I had to complain about something it would have to be the fact that Tesco could have fitted much more filling into the Bites as there is so little egg that if you shake one you'll feel the small egg and bacon ball rattling about inside it.

Very tasty though, I liked the fact that the egg tastes like proper egg rather than rubbery egg substitute and it also has a very nice consistency that granted is tougher than freshly made egg mayo but it's still nice and fresh feeling in my mouth. The flavour of the bacon is strong enough to taste, although to me has more of a smoked ham flavour than bacon. The pieces of bacon are quite salty when you eat one on its own, but this saltiness does not come through in the Bite as a whole.

The sausage meat is nice enough, it's well seasoned with a nice rounded sausage flavour. I found this part of the Savoury Bite to be rather dry, but nothing a dip in mayo couldn't sort out. Together the sausage meat and egg & bacon filling went really well, while the encasing breadcrumbs were subtly flavoured so as not to distract from the tastes of the other components of this snack.

As I remember they were not terribly bad calorie wise, being around 50 calories and 1.5g of fat. Fine if you only plan on having one or two, but these are surprisingly moreish considering how dry they are so you could easily end up eating more if you're one of those people who picks each time they go to the fridge.

Summary: Not a bad price for not a bad snack.
