Advantages: Solid taste, Great Price
Disadvantages: Texture is a bit tough, Flavour not as good as McVities
Whilst trying out many of the cheap TESCO VALUE products I recently spent an amazing 59p on 24 Jaffa Cakes from the TESCO VALUE range. As with almost all the products in the brand the product is packaged simply, the colouring is blue and white on a crude cardboard and with an image of the product on the top. It looks some what like a child's GCSE Graphics coursework, very amateur looking and simple, dull and terrible when compared to the McVities option of the biscuit. Having recently tried the terrible "Rich Tea" biscuits from the same brand I've got some serious worries about these before even opening the box. In fact it's almost a vision of these being taken out side and thrown for the ducks to eat, or used as part of some morbid food fight.
Inside the box the biscuits are split into 2 small plastic wrapper, each one contains 12 biscuits which look brilliant. Looks wise they are almost identical to the leading brand, perhaps the chocolate is a little bit worse off on the top than the major brand but the colour, size and shape all seem to be fairly identical. The biscuit is comprised of an orange brown sponge base with a chocolate top over it all and an orange jelly centre in it. So after looking like the McVities version, what about their taste and texture?
To the touch the biscuits are a bit stiff and the sponge is a little more solid than it maybe should be, it takes some effort to squeeze it in your fingers. When you bite it you soon realise that the texture it a lot tougher than it should be, maybe even a bite "stale" but yet still enjoyable. You can also notice a difference between the taste with the leading biscuits but yet you'll still find it enjoyable, it's a solid taste even if you may think the orange jelly is a bit "twangy". Unlike the rich tea biscuits from the same company these are really edible, in fact they are very enjoyable and at the price good value for money.
If your looking for a budget value biscuit these really are fantastic, not only are they worth trying but in fact they should be tried if you like Jaffa Cakes. Yes it's true they aren't the best, but they are very good at a good price, they might taste a little sub standard and bit a bit tougher but it doesn't make a big difference. This is one of the times TESCO VALUE has got it spot on.
