Advantages: Tasty; Very cheap
Disadvantages: It's not Soreen and not as special or yummy
I think Malt Loaf is a proper weird food, it's like Jaffa Cakes in a way because I never know whether it's a loaf or a cake and can eat it both ways!
We normally buy Soreen but last week they only had the double packs of that one in and that would be a waste for us because we don't eat it a lot as a family and even part of just one loaf usually gets chucked away. The problem was my dad had specifically asked for malt loaf so I picked up a Tesco Value one that was only about 20p, I knew he'd be able to tell the difference but because he normally has his toasted I didn't think it would matter that much.
It looks a bit paler than Soreen malt loaf but smells the same, when I cut a slice I can see loads of sultanas inside it and it's got the same sticky feel to it.
The malt loaf isn't quite as stodgy as Soreen and I could tell the difference straight away because it's quite a bit drier. The flavour is about the same but over all it's not quite as malty and the fruit inside isn't as fresh tasting or juicy. You can only tell the difference if you're having it plain though and if you add a bit of butter or toast the malt loaf then you wouldn't know if you were eating this or the more expensive Soreen.
My dad is the main eater of malt loaf in this house and he said it was nice, he knew it wasn't Soreen without even seeing the packet but said he would be happy for my mum to buy this from now on because he enjoyed the flavour.
Myself I prefer Soreen because it's more of a treat I think but this one wasn't that bad, just average.
Summary: Nice Enough I Reckon But I'd Rather Have A Slice Of Soreen
