Advantages: Cheap, good quality

Disadvantages: none

I love malt loaf, as does my son, and we often have a slice or two with a smear of butter as a healthy snack. Not only does it contain fruit which is great for energy, but it tastes yummy as well.

Back in the old days (when I was a kid) you could only really get Soreen, but this is a really great alternative, especially as it costs very little in comparison, around 30p against £1.50-£2.

In appearance, it's brown, with a yeasty smell and can be squished easily, something you want to watch out for when you're packing the shopping.

Slicing can also squash it slightly but it's quite easy to stretch out again.

Once sliced you can clearly see raisins in the bread and it looks quite appetising.

Taste is again slightly yeasty, but it's quite moist and not dissimilar to Soreen so really quite a good substitute at a reasonable price.

This makes a really good snack so I tend to buy several loaves and freeze them. To defrost just leave on the side for an hour or so or you can cut a few slices from a frozen loaf and toast. They keep for the same length of time as bread, which according to my freezer is 1-3 months and we eat at least 2 a month.

Overall I would recommend these as a good substitute for Soreen if you're on a budget. Also if you want your children to eat something more healthy than biscuits, they are quite filling and pack a lot of taste into a small slice but they're also sweet which appeals to children.

If you don't like Soreen though you won't like these.

Summary: If you like Soreen but you're on a budget then try this
