Advantages: Price, taste
Disadvantages: Not as creamy tasting as other shortbreads
Whilst doing my weekly shop I decided to buy a packet of Tesco Value Shortbread Fingers. I was reaching down to buy my usual packet of Value Bourbons when I noticed these discreetly sitting next to them. Now I love shortbread but I always feel cheated whenever I buy it because I think you don't get a lot of biscuit for your money. However, at a whopping 13p for 125g of shortbread I thought I couldn't go wrong!
The packaging has changed to the picture above and the biscuits are now in the usual Tesco Value blue and white packaging with minimum information. However, the packaging does say that they are 'deliciously crumbly shortbread fingers'. These can only be bought in Tesco but you do have to look out for them because as with all their cheap and cheerful products they are usually hidden away on the bottom shelf so you get tempted by the more expensive stuff first.
Now on to the taste test! In the interest of perfect tasting I have made myself a cup of tea and fairly greedily sat myself down with the whole packet (though I don't intend to eat them all!). On first opening the packet the biscuits look a little smaller in depth compared to a normal shortbread finger, though other than that look quite yummy, they are a normal colour and covered in sugar. In fact they seem covered in sugar a little too much!
The biscuits themselves are crunchy on the outside but crumbly on the inside. They taste really nice and not too far away from what I would describe as a normal shortbread biscuit. I think the only difference is that these don't taste quite so creamy but I would guess that to make these so cheap they probably use less butter. Though I dont think this is anything to complain about when I paid 13p! You get ten biscuits in the packet and they are that tasty that in the interest of this review I have already managed to eat three!
Just having a quick look at the Tesco website these shortbread fingers work out to be 10p for each 100g with the next least inexpensive shortbread being 37p. However, these prices do go up to a massive £1.00 for 100g! I'm sure there is a taste difference too but the price saving is so huge I'll continue to buy these biscuits for a tasty shortbread treat!
Summary: I'm amazed I can buy a packet of biscuits for 13p!
