Tesco Vanilla Party Tray Bake
Advantages: serves 15. cheap. design for kids
Disadvantages: sickly and underbaked
*Please note this review was originally posted on Ciao on 28th of April hence discussing my fiances birthday as yesterday!*
Tesco offer quite a big range of celebration and birthday cakes. The cake you choose will depend on what type of party you are buying for, your budget and what type of person you are purchasing for.
The Tesco Sweet Sensation Vanilla Party Tray Bake is described as being "vanilla flavoured sponge, topped with buttercream and decorated with dolly mixtures and multicoloured sugar strands". It claims to serve 15people.
A yellow box containing all the information about the cake holds a silver tray. There is a perspex front allowing us to see the cake. The cake is marked into 15 squares. There is a sponge on the base and a thin layer of creamy buttercream across the top. There are lots of coloured strands scattered around and each piece of cake is topped with a random dolly mixture.

This cake is available in Tesco stores and www.tesco.com. Its normal price is £4.50 but it is currently reduced to £3.50 until 17/05/11.
My fiance turned 28 yesterday and for the first time since I met him, he wanted a cake for his birthday. With our sons birthday being next week, I am rather short of cash so popped over to Tesco yesterday and picked up this Vanilla Tray Bake which was a snip at £3.50..one of the cheapest on the shelves. It was mainly going to me myself, Keith and Ryan eating it but we would be keeping some for close family so a 15piece cake seemed perfect.
I have tried the Asda version of this tray bake before and wasn't all that impressed. If I am honest, I prefer cakes that have buttercream and jam inside and white icing across the top. I thought this would be a change from the norm and at the price I paid, I cannot complain. It is well presented and I would say the appearance is certainly one aimed at children but we all like to be big kids don't we? No candles for us as silly me forgot to buy them so we decided to crack open the box and get munching last night!
*~*Slice Me Up Sweetie!*~*
Although the tray bake is presliced, the slices aren't exact as the corner pieces are either too big or too small in comparrison to the rest of the cake. A knife is needed to slice the cake away and onto a plate. Now, checking out the ratio of whats in the cake, the sponge takes up the biggest portion and makes up around 90% of the overall cake. Tesco seem to have been a bit stingy with the dolly mixtures..I like them and I feel a few more would be appropriate but I suppose if serving up to 15kids, 1 each means no fighting. There was a good selection of dolly mixtures but no joob joobs :(
The buttercream isn't as creamy as other cakes I have tried..it is quite yellow looking and the coloured strands cover quite a bit of it. It just seems weird having no jam but I am fussy! Each serving isn't massive but would be ideal for kids. The proof is in the taste test. The sponge itself is light and airy if a bit pale looking! It isn't moist not crumby..it is, in my opinion, slightly under baked..the mixture can still be tasted like the mix before it goes in the oven and I think it could have been in the oven a tad longer.
The buttercream is very soft and my teeth sink right into it allowing the sugar strands to come away with it. The buttercream used isn't as smooth as it could be..it has that gritty, sugar that hasn't dissolved properly, taste and the sugar strands aren't quite large and tasty weird. I could eat one piece of this cake but anymore and I began to feel sick despite the small amount of sweet topping on the sponge. Keith considered it nice enough but Ryan wouldn't touch it.
The tray and box seals back up well keeping the rest of the cake fresh. Ours has a date of 12/05/11 but has been shipped out to my parents, my sister and Keiths family with only a little left in foil for us. It keeps ok when wrapped up but if left out (like Ryans was), it starts to go slightly hard in the sponge department.
If you are doing a kids party for quite a few, one of these or even two would be cheap option to a standard cake. For us, although the cake wasn't too bad, it wasn't brilliant and was too sickly for our tastes. Its nice enough presented and there is plenty of it. For the amount of calories and sugar I took in from one square of cake, I would have expected to be more satisfied and indulged but sadly, it wasn't to be. To me, the cake tasted fake and unnatural.
Thanks for reading, Laura :)
Summary: not for us!
