Advantages: cheap, nice treat, not too sweet
I had forgotten all about these tea cakes. I used to buy them years ago with wagon wheels and then the interest in them I guess just faded. However recently when browsing dooyoo someone had written a review about them and it brought it right back.. I actually felt like eating one right then! I had teacake cravings lol.
So the next time I was at the supermarket I looked out for them and found them priced at £1.
I don't think the packaging had changed since I last tried them!
It comes in a bright yellow box with a clear panel so you can see the 6 tea cakes are individually wrapped.
The box design is really basic and simple, it states Tunnocks was established in 1890 and is still a family business.
Each tea cake is said to contain 106 calories - which I don't think is so bad compared to other chocolate bars I eat. The back of the box tells you the cakes are suitable for vegetarians which is nice as quite a lot of marshmallow typed products are not. The back of the box also includes the ingredients, an old image of Tom Tunnock outside his bakershop in 1897 where it all began - and also the ingredients written in arabic at the back of the box as well. The box is quite old in design but I wouldn't change it, it seems traditional and nice.
Now the cake itself, on removing the packaging you will find a ball shaped teacake with a flat base. The base is of biscuit which is delicious - not too crumbly or hard. On top of that it is filled with light, soft marshmallow and the entire thing is topped with a thin layer of milk chocolate.
It's a really delicious snack and not overly sweet or sickly. I actually can't think why I stopped buying them completly and hadn't purchased any for years. It tasted exactly how I remember and I certainly will start buying these again. I would not purchase these as often as I buy other chocolates and snacks but these are definitely a great snack that will find itself back into my cupboard again :)
If you haven't tried them i'd recommend you do. They are cheap in price and have a long best before date I have 5 months on the pack but I'm sure they'd get eaten before then :P They are also available in dark chocolate for those who prefer them.
Now i'm sat here with the last tea cake in the box, I think it's about time I stopped writing this review and started eating it instead :P
I give these teacakes 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
