Walkers Doritos Cool Original Flavour
Advantages: They taste delicious and are good value for money
Disadvantages: The calorie and fat content
I am not really a big crisp eater, personally if I am going to have a bit of a treat I would rather go for something sweet, however if I am going to have some crisps my favourites are Doritos, over Christmas the large sharing bags were Buy One Get One Free so I had to take Tesco up on this offer and stock up on them. One of my favourite flavours is the Cool Original, although I'm not sure exactly what flavour Cool Original is supposed to be there is something rather addictive about them.
Doritos Cool Original come in a large blue bag, basically a larger version of a regular sized crisp packet. Right at the top of the bag is a large blue and black triangle designed to look like a Dorito and the word "Doritos" written right across the bag in large white letters outlined in black and red. Just beneath this is the flavour of the crisps which in this case is "Cool Original" again this is written in large white letters. Right at the bottoms of the packet is the weight and also the nutritional information. The front of the packet is quite basic however it does stand out. The back of the packet is plain black in colour with most of the product information being in white, down the left hand side is information such as ingredients, nutritional information and allergy advise as well as contact details for Doritos should you need them. All of the information is set out inside small grey boxes which makes it very easy to read and find what you are looking for.
Doritos are basically corn chips, they are a triangle shape and quite large for a crisp, they are quite a pale yellow colour with little flecks in it and you can clearly see the flavouring on the crisps, this seems to have slight orangey colour specks in it. When you open the bag the crisps do have quite a strong smell to them, this has a slight spicy hint to it although I'm not sure they are supposed to be spicy. The actual flavour of Cool Original is a bit strange, it does have what I could say is a 'cool' element to it, the flavouring is very tangy and slightly spicy, it is definitely a strong flavouring so if you like mild flavours then this is probably not one for you, if I am going to have crisps I do like the flavouring to be strong, I hate crisps that just taste of plain potato, I do like the flavouring to be strong and noticeable which with this is the case. What I also like about Cool Original Doritos is that you do not get crisps with no flavour on them and then one or two with loads on, with these I have always found the flavouring to be quite evenly spread, obviously some do have slightly more flavour on them than other (these are my favourite ones) but you do not get crisps that have not flavouring on at all.
Obviously crisps are not the healthiest thing so I wasn't expecting to be that impressed with the nutritional information, this is given per 30g serving and includes
*Calories - 152
*Protein - 2.5g
*Carbohydrates - 17.1g
*Fat - 8.1g
*Fibre - 0.9g
Personally I do think that these are quite high in calories and fat, but they are crisps so I didn't really expect anything else, also I find it very hard to stick to a 30g serving, if I have the bag next to me I have to move it in the end to prevent me from eating the majority of them and as my husband hates them I am the only one in the house that eats them.
Because of the high calorie and fat content I do not buy these on a regular basis, as Doritos are one of the few crisps I enjoy I find it best just to not have them in the house unless it is a special occasion as they really will not last that long at all.
On the back of the packet is some allergy advise which states that this product contains Milk, it also says that the crisps are made in a factory which handles wheat, gluten, barley, soya, celery and mustard. This is clearly listed on the back of the packet and is easy to read so if you do suffer from allergies you can quickly and easily see if these crisps will be suitable for you. This section also states that the crisps are suitable for vegetarians which is perfect me and my Mum who are both Veggie.
As I have mentioned I brought my Cool Original Doritos from my local Tesco however the large 250g sharing bags can be brought in most supermarkets as well as a lot of corner shops and convenience stores. Each 250g bag costs just £1.98, however when I purchased them over Christmas they were buy one get one free which makes them even more a bargain, although I would be happy to pay full price for these as well. Personally I would say that they were worth the money but this is because I find them so enjoyable, I certainly wouldn't say that they are over priced at all as you do get a large bag for the money and I do find that the bags are full almost to the top so you are not paying for a half empty bag.
Overall I would definitely recommend Cool Original Doritos, they have a lovely strong distinctive flavour to them which is slightly spicy, they are perfect if you are a fan of strong flavours. The large bag which I brought is ideal for sharing perfect for a night in or if you have people round as a snack. The only disadvantage for me is probably the calories and fat content but as I only buy these for special occasions this is really a problem but I wouldn't recommend eating a huge amount on a regular basis, and also the fact that they are so addictive. They are very reasonably priced and you do get a decent amount for your money. This is definitely a product I will continue to buy and one I would recommend
Summary: A lovely snack for special occasions
