Advantages: Nice flavour & quality as you'd expect from Walkers
Disadvantages: Not quite what they used to be
I used to love Smoky Bacon flavour crisps when I was younger. I hadn't had any for years until just recently, and although they're still tasty, they're not quite the same these days. Perhaps it's me holding high hopes for these, but I don't think they have the same texture or acute flavour that they used to have.
These crisps are produced by Walkers, and so you'd expect a tasty product with quality ingredients from a company with so many years of knowledge and experience. Being such a popular brand, you shouldn't have too much trouble picking up a packet or multi-pack of these.
Smoky Bacon are available in a larger individual 53.5g packet (around 40p, Tesco) and a multipack of 6 x 25g bags (around £1.25, Tesco).
The larger individual bag contains 183 calories and 11.4g fat, which is relatively high for a packet of crisps, though it's a larger than average size packet. The regular 25g packets in the multipacks contain 133 calories and 8.3g of fat, which is about average for regular Walkers.
Since Walkers moved to using sunseed oil in their products, the saturated fat content has been reduced, meaning healthier alternatives are now being used in these crisps which is good to know.
I'm not sure whether it's perhaps the newer sunseed usage that has changed the taste & texture of these or not, but I think that over the years the texture has become slightly drier with a taste which isn't quite as pronounced as it once was.
These crisps are still rather greasy to handle, and as you'll know if you've eaten flavours like this before, can become quite sticky and smelly on your hands.
The texture is crunchy, yet I've found the occasional ones in the packet to be slightly chewy rather than crisp. They're quite lightweight and thin, so I don't find them to be too filling.
The underlying taste is potatoey, so you know you're getting a proper potato-based product. The flavour overlaying this, the smoky bacon, is fairly rich but not as I remember it to be. I'm not entirely sure how to explain it, I think it's a flavour you need to try in order to be able to say whether or not you like it. I personally find the flavour to be very tasty, and there's nothing immediate to dislike about them. But obviously that depends on personal preference.
I would recommend these, though I can't rate them as highly as I may have done a few years ago. If you haven't yet tried these, I would try a single packet and see if you like them. Don't be put off by the smell, (although I quite like it), as you may just find you love them!
Summary: Tasty crisps even though they're not as good as I remember them to be
