Advantages: Savoury, pleasingly textured
Disadvantages: Smell horrible
When I was a boy I remember all my friends absolutely loving "cheesy" wotsits, they were in everyones lunchbox and at every party you ever went to.
I was never a fan of them myself as I hated the overwhelming smell that eminated from both the colourful bowls filled with the puffed perpetrators and from you're best friend himself as his face and hands would inevitably be covered in the telltale artificial orange hue.
So for most of my childhood I steered well clear. As a grown up however (in name only) I decided to see whether my hatred of the humble wotsit would still hold true, so I bought a bag making sure to wait until I got home before exposing myself to the hi-stink I'd always assosciated with them.
In all those years only one major change has occured and that is Wotsits are no longer produced by Golden Wonder but now belong to Walkers. Judging by the packaging the trademark orange glow was still there and I presumed the fetid smell would also remain.
Unfortunately I was right, on opening the bag I was "greeted" by the overwhelming scent of foot. I persevered though and resolved to finally get around to tasting a wotsit rather than just judging it on smell alone like I had as a Juvenile.
I popped a puff into my mouth in a manner resembling an old English maiden, eating a cucumber sandwich, after all I certainly didn't want my hands to be covered in this powerfully pigmented pungeant powder.
I chomped down on the light and airy cheeselet nestled gingerly betwixt my diligent digits and was instantly innovated!!! My childish preconceptions melted into obscurity as my servile tongue submitted to the salty savoury snack that now adorned it.
Noisome? No question , Odorous? of course, Odious? Not So!!! Once you get past the olfactory assault the tongue is in for a tremendous treat.
In summary do not be put off by the powerful smell these cheesy chappies churn out, once you taste them, all will become clear.
Summary: Worth getting past the smell to taste.
