Alpen Groove Bar
It's hard to find cheap treats that are good for you. Why do chocolate bars and naughty things always seem that much cheaper! On my last visit to our local 99p store I spotted a huge range of Alpen cereal bars. I never quite knew that they offered such a huge range until I saw them all together. I always buy McVities Go Ahead Biscuits but fancied a change so I setted on Alpen's Nutty Chocolate Groove Bar.
~ Packaging ~
The bars come boxed with 6 in a pack and feature a handy flap across the front of the packaging so the box can be resealed easily. The packaging is modern and eye-catching with a plain rather delicious brown background, white text and line drawings of a chunk of Chocolate and a hazlenut. The usual nutritional information and company details can be found on the back.
~ The Bar ~
Upon opening the packet I am greeted with a good sized solid looking muesli bar packed with oats, seeds and nuts with a surprise of thick chocolate fitted inside and on top of the bar thanks to the 'groove'. (This bar reminds me of the bars I used to buy my hamster!) The chocolate does not have the look of normal chocolate. It's more like the chocolate topping that you used to get in a squeezy bottle to put on top of your ice-cream or alternatively like the chocolate from the choc-dip pots.
~ The Taste ~
The bar is very chewy and has a nice texture. It is well formed so will not fall apart and make a mess unlike some other bars from competitors. The chocolate taste is mild and not overpowering. Each bar contains just 145 calories which is not that bad considering the chocolate filling. The main ingredients are rice, oats, wheat, Sugar, Hazlenut and almond.
~ Summary ~
Overall it is a nice change from my usual purchase and will certainly be going back to try the other flavours in the range - lemon and strawberry. I did not think that it would be quite as filling but it definately filled a hole. I am not sure of their original price but at 99p for 6 I think these are a bargain and will be stocking up on my next visit.
