I recently bought this Wholebake 9 Bar Flax variety from the 9 Bar website after first trying some of their products from my local supermarket. I bought a variety pack of these snack bars and one of the flavours I received was this 9 Bar with added flax seed.
These handmade 50g sized seed based snack bars are very high in energy and contain natural ingredients as well as being gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. They contain a mix of chewy and crunchy seeds which are blended into a sweet honey setting and then topped with a thick layer of delicious, melt-in-the-mouth carob. There is large amount of golden sunflower seeds and crispy green pumpkin seeds along with lesser amounts of small sesame seeds, poppy seeds and dehulled hemp seeds. These make up 52% of the bar with the brown flax seed comprising 5% of the bar.
I find the bar quite a challenge to chew as it's literally packed tight with these seeds. The pumpkin seeds are particularly difficult to chew and they feel as though they have a hardened shell which must be broken down in the chewing process. However, the overall texture is really interesting and enjoyable to tackle. It allows me to get a hearty mouthful and to slow down and appreciate every bite! The flavour of the bar is quite earthy, nutty and sweet with the honey and carob offsetting the individual seed flavours which can be quite rich and buttery.
These bars contain 261 calories and 17.8g of fat and the brand claim these are an excellent health food to replenish energy and calories, particularly if you exercise a lot or expend a lot of calories in your daily life. They do leave me feeling full and satisfied between meals with a slow release of energy provided getting me through each hour until the next meal.
I really enjoy these bars and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a healthy snack product. You can find them on sale at places like Holland and Barratt and some selected flavours are now making their way into some supermarkets. They cost around £2 for a four pack or you can buy a 50g sized individual bar.
As I mentioned in my previous review, I asked dooyoo to add an item and this is it! It was the first suggestion I've ever made to dooyoo so I'm really pleased they added it!
I bought this bar in Holland & Barrett a couple of days ago because I wanted a snack and I wanted it to be something that had some health value, and for me this met both of those criteria!
This bar is called a 9 Bar, and there are a few varieties. The one I am reviewing is the Flax bar.
This bar is packaged in a clear plastic wrapper, with a paper sticker on the front that tells you what it is called and says that it 'Contains the equivalent of 1000mg Flax seed oil' and that it is a 'High quality source of protein'. At the bottom it says it is a 'Mixed seed bar with flax and hemp'. The best before date is clearly stamped on the side of the wrapper. On the back of the package there is more information, including the ingredients, nutritional breakdown, website and the allergy information.
One of the things I look for in food is its health value and one of the things that sold this bar to me was that it says it is wheat free, gluten free, dairy free and it contains no trans-fatty acids. I know that there are a lot of people who are allergic to wheat, gluten or dairy and that many people try to cut down on bad fats, so I think this product will appeal to them.
I also note that this bar contains all nine of the essential amino acids (which are what protein is made of).
When I opened this bar I smelt it, in the interests of writing a review! I could smell a sweet smell and a sort of wholesome smell.
The bar is about one centimetre thick and has a thin layer of carob on top (which contains sugar) and underneath there is a mixture of seeds, as I had expected from the packaging! The bar is quite heavy for its small size and weighs 50g. I didn't think I would be able to eat all of it in one go (and I couldn't).
When I bit in to the bar, the first thing I noticed was the chocolately taste that comes from the carob, and the sweet taste in the rest of the bar. Although the carob layer is very thin, the flavour does permeate the whole bar. So overall it does seem very sweet. The texture that was most apparent was the quite crunchy taste of the seeds and there was a subtle flavour of pumpkin seeds. Some of the seeds, such as the hemp seeds, were very small and I could neither taste them or feel their texture.
After a few mouthfulls of the bar I felt quite full. There are no storage instructions but with so much sweetness I thought it would be best in the fridge. I left it in there for a day and finished the bar. Interestingly I thought it tasted better cool because the sweet flavours were less apparent. It had also kept very well.
In conclusion, I would recommend this bar to anyone who wants a sweet treat whilst getting some nutritional value from a snack product, and especially to anyone who has an allergy to wheat, gluten or dairy. However I personally found that it was a bit too sweet and I would only buy it again if I wanted something for a treat.
Also I think it is important to note that if you are taking flax oil you should make sure you can eat this as it contains a lot of flax oil.
I paid £0.86 for this in Holland & Barrett, but they are cheaper if you buy a packet of three and sometimes they are on offer.
