“ Brand: Lush / Type: Soap / Subcategory: Butter / What it does: Enricheses „
Just after Christmas, I decided to make a big order from Lush to take advantage of the goodie bags on offer. I ended up ordering one of each of the Christmas Retro items, one of which was this buttercream soap, Randy Butter.
***What is Lush?***
Lush is a store that makes toiletries and cosmetics, using natural and organic ingredients where possible and minimising packaging where they can. It started out as a mail order company called Cosmetics to Go, but this failed and the new store, Lush, opened in Poole, Dorset. Later branches of the shop opened in London and beyond, and there are now Lush stores all over the world. As well as in store, you can also buy products from the website, www.lush.co.uk. There are similar websites for many different countries including the USA, Japan and Germany.
Lush buy ingredients only from companies that do not test on animals. All of their products are suitable for vegetarians and many are suitable for vegans.
Lush say: "We believe in happy people making happy soap, putting our faces on our products and making our mums proud.
"We believe in long candlelit baths, sharing showers, massage, filling the world with perfume and in the right to make mistakes, lose everything and start again."
***What is Retro?***
The Retro range is only available online or via mail order, as it is made up of products that have been discontinued from stores, but were deemed popular enough not to be discontinued completely. Retro products are often more expensive than the normal range of products, as they are made in smaller quantities, but there is some interesting stuff to be found among the products!
Randy Butter is a brandy, cocoa and rum scented buttercream. It contains coconut oil, cocoa butter and fair trade shea butter to moisturise the skin, as well as brandy, cinnamon leaf oil and cognac oil to add to the scent. The product is suitable for vegans. Buttercreams are basically soaps, but they are creamier and more moisturising than normal soaps. I thought this product sounded absolutely delicious and I couldn't wait to try it! 100g retailed for £4.95 at Christmas 2010.
The product arrived wrapped in cellophane but I could smell the boozy citrusy scent through the wrapper. The product was light brown in colour and cloudy in appearance. When I unwrapped the soap and popped it in the soap dish, I thought the smell seemed sharper and I could definitely detect the booze! It also smelt slightly citrusy. The buttercream was smooth and soft to the touch.
I decided the product would be best used as an occasional treat, rather than an everyday shower gel. Therefore, I've kept it as an evening product to use during my post-gym shower, using a different shower gel in the daytime.
I wasn't expecting Randy Butter to lather very well, as it is a buttercream, but I found it did a decent job on my shower puff although I'm not sure if I'd be able to get a lather without one. I found that the smell was quite strong in the shower, which isn't a problem for me as I love it, but it might be an issue for some.
The product felt smooth and luxurious on my skin while I was showering, but washed off easily. After I had dried myself and got into my pyjamas I found that the slightly boozy, creamy, citrusy scent still lingered on my skin for a couple of hours which was brilliant. I also found that my skin felt quite moisturised, and I didn't need to apply any moisturiser except on my lower legs which are especially dry.
The product seems to be lasting well as I don't need to use much at one time. It also works well as a moisturising hand soap, which is great for me as I do suffer from dry hands.
Overall, I highly recommend this product. It is moisturising and long lasting, smells delicious, and is made mostly from natural ingredients. I hope it comes back next year because I'll definitely be repurchasing!
Since Ive been shopping in Lush Ive been buying a lot of their soaps and I think by now I must have tried every single bar that they offer in their stores so lately (before their site went down anyway!) Ive been checking out their Retro range of products in search for new - well old - products to try out and this 'Lush Randy Butter Soap' was my latest purchase simply because I liked the name. I dont even know really why I bought this because I HATE the smell of proper brandy with a passion - just one whiff is enough to make me feel really ill so in theory I should have seen this bar and carried on searching but for some reason I decided to take a chance on this and now Im very glad I did because it has fast become one of my favourite ever Lush soaps.
Price: Around £3.50 - 100g bar.
Stockists: Only available from lush.com - This bar is NOT available in store as it is part of Lush's 'Retro' range.
Other Info: 100% vegan & as with all Lush soaps none of the ingredients used in making this soap have been tested on animals.
So as with all Lush soaps dont worry if yours doesnt look exactly like the picture with this review - all Lush soaps are cut from a massive bar so each bar will vary slightly in size, colour & shape. Mine actually does look a lot like the one in the picture as it is a small bar that is white & beige in colour and very smooth all over. It has the same kind of waxt texture you would expect from soap but it also looks really creamy even before you have put it anywhere near water - somehow you can just tell this bar is going to do wonders for your skin which is always a good sign.
This soap lathers up really well and very quickly Ive found - even more so than most other Lush soaps. The lather is very bubbly like you would expect but it also feels really creamy and thicker than most so as soon as you start to wash your skin with this it feels instantly softer and smoother. You dont need to use a lot of this soap each time you use it - especially if you use it alongside a shower puff - so one bar will last you a really long time as it lathers up amazingly. My skin feels clean as soon as I apply this which is always a brillaint extra.
Now the smell of this even though I love it I think will have people divided. I think rather than smelling of the strong, horrible booze that is brandy this smells like toffee and caramel and is a very sweet scent with a very slight bitter tone underneath with I assume is where the alcohol scent comes into it but it is barely noticable which is a great thing for me personally. The smell of this is fantastic in my opinion - one of the best Lush offer I think - its sweet and toffee what more could I ask for? But if you are buying this for the brandy smell dont bother because it hardly has that scent at all and I think it might be slightly too sweet for some - even though I think its perfect. The scent lasts a good few hours on my skin as well even after Ive dried off so I can smell this all day long.
This also makes my skin feel pretty amazing as well which is surprising because most soaps tends to dry out my skin which is why I dont like using them on my body but this one has the opposite effect. It leaves my skin feeling clean and refreshed - which lets face it is everything you want from a soap but it also moisturises and softens my skin loads because of the creamy texture - so much so that I dont need to use extra lotion after using this so its a massive tine saver for me when Im in a rush. Cannot recommend highly enough - check out Lush's Retro range!
Thanks For Reading.
