I was shopping a little while ago and remembered I needed to get some more soap, well as I have told you in another review I always use Boots royal jelly soap so off I went into Boots only to find the shelf was empty, after I enquired I was told they didn?t have any in the shop and would be getting any for a couple of days, well I was sure that what I had at home so I carried on with my shopping.
Later that day I was in Sainsburys doing my weekly shop, while I was pondering the shelves something caught my eye that brought back memories of when I was a little girl. The small white box seemed to stand out from the rest of the bars of soap, it had written on it in black letters ?Pears?. I remembered how my mother would use nothing but this on me when I was small.
This soap is widely available in many many out lets as well as Sainsburys including Super drug, Safeway and many pharmacies. I bought the box of soap which cost me 89p in Sainsburys for a 125g bar containing an oval shaped bar of soap, which as well as being amber in colour is quite transparent, it has the word ?PEARS? pressed into the inward bow of the top and bottom of the bar.
The soap does not smell quite as strong as some on the market but has a gentle almost delicate herby sent to it. At first the bar does feel a little awkward and clumsy in your hand but after a few washes becomes more easily shaped to the hand, it lathers up quite well, giving a nice soft gentle lather with which to cleanse your self.
After washing even my face with this soap my skin felt very soft and fresh, I didn?t find it dried my skin at all. I?ve been using this soap for about two weeks constantly now and I am really impressed, my skin feels soft, smooth and lovely and clean. This soap is a little more expensive than some soaps on the ma
rket but I feel it is really worth it. Pears soap is also suitable for sensitive and babies skin.
The soap itself is quite a firm bar and keeps its firmness even after washing, unlike some soaps that claim to be all that and just fall into a soggy mess on the wash basin, I find most of these soaps are a waste of money as most of it is washed down the plug hole and are used up within a very short time. As I have said I have been using this bar now for about two weeks and it has only shrunk by about a third with it being used by three of us for showers as well as use in the washbasin.
Andrew Pears developed the soap, a Cornish man and farmer?s son from Mevagissey where he trained as a barber. He arrived in London and opened a shop in Gerrard Street, Soho where he sold Powders, Rouges and creams to help cover the affects of the thick white chalky make up they used back then.
You may have seen pictures of the upper-class people of those days with awful white make up on, this was worn because common folk and peasants were often dark skinned and suntanned because many of them work out doors so the upper classes would make them selves appear as pale as possible to show they were upper-class and different, a kind 16th century snobbery.
Harsh soaps that were use in Britain in those times along with the chalky make up, dried and ravaged their skin. Andrew quickly realised there was a need for a more gentle soap and after much trail and error came up with a possess to remove all the impurities and refining the base soap before adding the delicate perfume of English garden flowers.
Pears Soap is still made today with all pure ingredients: - glycerine, natural oils, cedar, thyme and rosemary. Most clear soaps are made on a base of animal fat but Pears isn?t nor is it tested on animals, it is non-comedogenic so it won?t clog
up your pores, and in the same old fashion tradition that has lasted for about 200 years is left to mellow for approximately three months until it reaches its transparency.
Years ago, Pears soap used to run a competition where parents would send in pictures of their darling little girls with nice fresh complexions to be judged by Pears, the winner as well as winning money would then become the face of there advertisements though out the year. As my memory recalls this was quite a thing to be chosen for, as the little pears girl in those days was the junior equivalent of miss world.
I can remember my mum telling me she was going to enter me for it one day, she never did though, sadly this competition is no longer running, but my mum said I would have won it if she had of entered me but there again most mum?s say things like that don?t they.
I have found out since I bought this soap, Pears have just brought out a liquid facial cleanser, which is 100% soap free, this I must try.
All in all I would recommend this soap to anyone if they have sensitive skin or not, I have used and favoured ?Boots Royal Jelly? soap for a few years but now I have rediscovered this one I think I will alternate them for a change, as it is without doubt a good reasonably priced product that has been around for approximately 200 years and kept its recognition the whole time as one of the worlds leading soaps, which in my view speaks for its self.
