Tesco Value Soap
Advantages: Cheap and effective.
I used to buy basic soaps in packs of four or five and often bought the cheapest available. However, over the past couple of years the price I was paying for these packs steadily grew until I realised I was paying around three times as much as I originally did. I then started looking around for cheaper soaps and eventually saw this Tesco Everyday Value Soap in my local store. I was actually shocked when I saw the price as it was only 11p. This is the cheapest bar of basic soap I've found so far. I bought a few bars but was slightly apprehensive about the quality of the soap. When something is so inexpensive and the cheapest you can purchase you naturally expect it to be of a lower quality than the more expensive brands. However, when I got this home and into the bath I was really amazed by it!
The product comes as an individual bar of soap which is wrapped in a transparent cellophane wrapper. Although these are single soap bars they seem slightly larger in comparison to other soaps I've used. The size is 125g and they are shaped like a large rectangular brick. They are a big, heavy white soap. The wrapper carries the design of the Tesco 'Everyday Value' range and shows some basic text along with a few cartoon style pictures of bath-time related things like rubber ducks, dripping taps and bubbles. Apart from that there is very limited information about the soap printed on the wrapper. Full ingredients are printed, storage instructions, warnings and some basic product information.
Tesco state that this soap has been "specially formulated" and that it is suitable for everybody in the family to leave skin "fresh and clean". Ingredients include sodium palmate and sodium palmate kernelate as well as glycerine and perfume.
The soap is really easy to hold because of it's large size and I like the fact that it has angular edges rather than rounded tips as this means it doesn't slip out of wet hands. The soap melts and lathers easily. I find it's easy to apply straight to skin or onto a sponge/shower puff. Either way you create an acceptable level of foam and bubble with which to clean your skin. The bubbles feel soft and silky and don't look of feel greasy or slimy. The soap is only lightly fragranced and has a scent that is crisp and clean and which means the soap is suitable for both men and women.
The soap performs well at cleaning my body and leaving me fresh and clean. It also doubles up well as a shaving foam! All areas of my body can be cleaned by the soap including harder to clean areas like smelly feet, dry sweaty underarms and intimate areas. I also feel comfortable using the soap bubbles on my face. I have had no unwanted reactions to the soap. I have experienced skin issues like eczema in the past and using this soap has not ignited any problems with that. After use I feel clean and my skin feels nice. I wouldn't say the soap was moisturising but it doesn't dry the skin out either. It just cleans well and doesn't strip the skin of any natural oils.
I use the soap in the bathroom only and have a bar for the bath and one for the basin. One thing I've noticed that isn't such a good thing is that the soap leaves quite a lot of waxy deposits after use. I did not notice this in the bath but in my basin I noticed that the edges of the sink were quite messy and cloudy just after I had cleaned it. I have also had issues with my sink hole being bunged up although whether the soap fat really contributed to this I am really unsure about.
Overall I'm very pleased with the soap. I love the price of the soap. It's really difficult these days to save money and find things to afford but this soap is a real bargain. I also like that the soap smells good, feels nice when using and leaves me clean and feeling refreshed. As a basic soap it's excellent. It doesn't offer a luxury experience but it does what you want a soap to do. I will continue to buy this and would recommend to anyone looking to save money.
Available at Tesco in store and online.
