Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse
by janimoo23
My daughter is really going to be really spoiled this Christmas (she is the only grandchild on both mine and my husband's side so both grandmas really spoil her) and with her birthday then coming up at the beginning of February she is likely to get more stuff. In a panic preparation to make some room in the house, I have decided to go ... through her toys that are taking up far too much space in our dining room, living and basically all around the house. A lot of them she doesn't play with anymore and whilst I was going through packing it away, I came across this cute Fisher Price Seahorse. I have completely forgotten that we have it actually.
My daughter was given it as a present when she was born by her uncle. It has since been 21 months but from what i remember, the seahorse came packadged in an open window box with instructions included with it.
Seahorse is aimed to soothe the baby to sleep by playing gentle lullabies with the sea/ocean sound in the background. I must admit, this toy is very cute and very simple. It has got cute smiley face and it's made of really soft material. Music is played by gently pressing seahorse's belly which then plays for 5 minutes continuously. During this time baby can nicely doze off by listening to 8 gentle lullabies and sea sound and whilst playing, seahorse's belly glows in yellow. Music then stops on its own after 5 minutes or can be stopped by pressing the belly down again and holding until the music stops and light goes off.
I haven't actually used this toy until my daughter was around 4 months old. She was used to going to sleep on her own in the dark so she didn't need music etc to soothe her to sleep. She did have the seahorse around though in the day and I tried to use it few time to soothe her sleep in the day and it didn't quite work. I found that it had opposite effect on my daughter and that music and light made her wanted to play rather than sleep and glowing belly really distracted her. I was not too bothered, i stopped using it to soothe her but I did leave it around though for her to play with if she wants. To be honest she has maybe grabbed it couple of times thats all. From my point of view, as mentioned above this toy is cute looking I have one negative from me which is that I did find the music to be rather annoying and if this was not a gift, i would not have purchased it at all.
Seahorse can be brought in either pink or blue colour, we have a pink version. Available in many places such as Argos, Toys r us, Mothercare, Amazon, Ebay etc. Currently on Amazon it sells at £18.99 it might be worth to look around though for cheaper price.
Could I recommend it? I would certainly advise anyone to give this toy a go but would mention that it didn't work for my daughter this of course doesn't meant that it would not work for other child. I do like Fisher Price toys, they are great and this one is not an exception. It just wasn't one for my daughter really. Read the complete review |

Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse

I bought this item on offer in Argos for £12.99, as I had read plenty of rave reviews and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The Fisherprice Seahorse Soother is supposed to act as an all-in-one comforter for babies and little ones alike. Firstly, it is really very cute to look at, it has little rosy cheeks and is a really ... lovely plush toy. It is only just a little bit smaller than my newborn so for £12.99 I think it's a good price for the amount of toy you get!
The material the seahorse is made of is super soft to touch which is great for babies as they instantly feel soothed and comforted and it keeps them warm. The tummy section (the yellow bit), I imagined to be quite hard before I bought it, it looks like it is a plastic shell (remember care bears with the globe tummy? I imagined this!).....however it is actually like a soft rubber which is very durable and squishy. When yoou press the yellow tummy section it lights up with an absolutely gorgeous night light which my baby is transfixed by. It's not too bright and even I find it quite soothing to look at. This is great for putting in the cot or crib with the baby as mine seemed to dislike being in the dark a LOT. It only stays on for 5 minutes but it really doesn't need to be on any longer than this, by this time baby is already asleep in my experience.
When you push the tummy section, as well as lighting up, it also produces a lovely soothing tune. It is the kind of tune you would get from a cot mobile but a little bit quieter and softer. These tunes are intertwined with the sound of ocean waves and bubbles which is also very relaxing. I have watched my baby go from wide awake to fast asleep within minutes by switching this on! Like I said, it only stays on for 5 minutes so you don't have to worry about it batteries running out or anything like that. Also if you still have the baby in your room with you you can switch it on and it won't keep you awake but will hopefully still help baby drift off.
I don't actually know where we would be without this toy - I completely understand why it has such great reviews. Some people are dubious about baby relying on a night light/noises to get them to sleep but it has really helped us get the baby in to a solid bed time routine and I would highly recommend. Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse

I was given the soothing seahorse in blue when my son was about 5 months old. He had no problem sleeping once he was off but did need help dropping off to sleep by himself sometimes. I thought I would involve the seahorse in his bedtime routine and see if it helped.
I would say that the seahorse helped him to relax and have ... continuity in his routine of what would be there as he was dropping off to sleep. The glow from the seahorses tummy is soft and subtle and isn't bright enough to keep him awake, just enough to reassure him. The music is also quite lovely, not like some electronic toys! You can choose from well known nursery tunes or the sounds of the ocean. He always seemed to prefer the white noise of the ocean sounds as it is like swishing waves, I imagine it may have been reminiscent of the womb. We had to have the volume if high to hear it well but there is two settings if you wish it to be more gentle.
The music carries on for about ten minutes and you just squeeze the tummy to get it going again. Ten minutes was normally enough for us though as my son would have fallen asleep by the time the seahorse stopped playing. When it is going to stop the light from its tummy slowly fades which is lovely.
The seahorse is great to cuddle as it is soft and the fins are silky for the baby to experience different textures. I have found myself giving it a little cuddle sometimes too!
I wish I had been given this toy when my son was first born as it has become a firm favourite with him and us parents. I will be buying one in pink as a gift for my new niece. Read the complete review |
