Ty December the Birthday Bear
by rolandrat ---Why I Bought It--- I was not one of those who was an avid collector in the 1990s. I stumbled upon the Beanie Babies when I found a gorgeous stars and stripes teddy on Ebay. After that I was hooked! Since then I have bought quite a few - not to collect - but just because I like them, and some for presents. ... This colourful bear was bought as part of a job lot with loads of others from Ebay. ---The Brand--- A Beanie Baby is a stuffed animal, made by Ty Warner Inc, later renamed as Ty Inc. in late 1993. ---Birthday Bears in General--- As well as having a range of ordinary 'Birthday Bears' Ty brought out two ranges which represented every month of the year. * Series1 The one in the image is a December Bear - from the first series - each month had a similar water colour bear but the name of the month on its chest and the colour of its head, feet and ruffle were different according to which month it was. These were the realistic looking bears - the poems and noses reflected the respective birthstones for each month. * Series 2 Ty also brought out a second range of Birthday Bears, more the teddy bear shape - these were plain coloured bears but this time they were all wearing party hats. ---The Product--- 8 inches head to feet. Colourful bear - made in a seated position. Called 'December'. Comes with turquoise head and soles of feet. Has black beady eyes and a transparent plastic nose in turquoise. The main body is in a multi coloured fur - sort of water colour effect with splodges of different colours. On his chest he has an embroidered birthday cake with candles and the name 'December' He has a little stub tail and around his neck he has an elasticated ruffle in turquoise - this can be removed but is attached to the bear by a few stitches at the back. ---Beanie Bear Information--- Birthday NONE Style Number 4371 Introduced 11/01/01 Retired (12/31/01) ---Poem --DECEMBER-- --My nose is the color of my birthstone-- --Turquoise-- --It brings happiness-- --creativity and success!- ---Cost--- As this bear is one of the 'retired' beanies the cost is hard to determine. Currently it can be picked up for £3.80. I only buy mine when they are either in a job lot of are around £1-2. ---Tags--- An integral part for collectors was to keep the tags of these stuffed animals in immaculate condition. There were two tags - one was the 'swing tag' - a heart shaped cardboard tag attached to its ear and a fabric 'tush tag' sewn into its base somewhere. You were able to buy plastic heart shaped transparent covers for the 'swing tags' to stop them getting scuffed and damaged. ---My Opinion--- This little bear is a cute character and looks a bit like a clown with his ruffle - but this can easily be snipped off if giving him to young children. His fur is very colourful and I love the transparent nose idea - but I tend to like transparent stuff in general anyway. These bears sit down very well and would be a great birthday gift if you buy the relevant month for the person - such a novel idea. Mine would be a green head for May but I have not got that one - but they are cute little characters and a good little gift if you can think of nothing else. These bears can be picked up in mint condition from Ebay quite inexpensively with all their tags intact. Even though bought in pristine condition I would either surface wash or quickly hand wash - making sure to keep the cardboard tags dry - this can be done quite easily if you are careful. I like these colourful bears myself - they have soft colourful fur and sit nicely without flopping over. These birthday bears would be a great gift for someone and would not break the bank - but would look much better than just giving a card. Much more colourful than the second series of birthday bears which are plain - I think these are a novel idea - especially as their colour and noses are tied into the month's birth stone. I can see how the collectors of these beanies caught the collecting 'bug' - I can imagine how nice a whole row of these birthday bears would look! ---Would I Recommend?--- Yes definitely. ---Star Rating--- 5 stars. ---Website--- http://world.ty.com Read the complete review |

Ty Eucalyptus the Koala
by rolandrat ---Why I Bought It--- I was not one of those who was an avid collector in the 1990s. I stumbled upon the Beanie Babies when I found a gorgeous stars and stripes teddy on Ebay. After that I was hooked! Since then I have bought quite a few - not to collect - but just because I like them, and some for presents. ... This sitting koala bear was bought as part of a job lot with loads of others from Ebay. ---The Brand--- A Beanie Baby is a stuffed animal, made by Ty Warner Inc, later renamed as Ty Inc. in late 1993. Ty stopped producing the product in 1999; but demand led them to reconsider. In 2000, a Beanie Baby named "The Beginning" was introduced to remind people of Beanie Babies' comeback. (Wikipedia) ---The Product--- 8 inches nose to foot. A realistic sort of koala who has n=mottled grey fur but has cream fur for his stomach, ears and fads of feet. He has balck beady eyes and a large black plastic nose. Padded head but his body is filled with beans/pellets. ---Beanie Bear Information--- Birthday 04/28/99 Style Number 4240 Introduced 05/01/99 Retired (10/27/99) ---Poem --Koalas climb with grace and ease-- --To the top branches of the trees-- --Sleeping by day under a gentle breeze-- --Feeding at night on two pounds of leaves!-- ---Variations--- Ty have made about half a dozen koala beanies. ---Cost--- As this bear is one of the 'retired' beanies the cost is hard to determine. Currently it can be picked up for between £3.50 and £15. ---My Opinion--- This is a realistic looking koala bear and does not come with a ribbon or anything like that. He is a just a basic koala bear - who can be put to sit back on his back legs or put forward and he will then stand on his four legs. I like these sort of Ty Beanies for when younger children come to visit as they have no ribbons or other attachments that can be taken off and are just the basic wild animals. I know if I had young children at home now I would be collecting lots of these animals - as they would be good for playing with and having 'tea parties' but not too buly to store. I like these natural looking beanies and also have a pair of bears and a super elephant, as well as my cats of course.. His fur is very soft and he has a cute sort of cheeky expession on his face. ---Would I Recommend?--- Yes definitely. ---Star Rating--- 5 stars. ---Website--- http://world.ty.com Read the complete review |

(Wikipedia) ---The Product--- 8 inches nose to tail. A realistic looking bear in light beige slightly mottled fur. The bear has lighter fur on the pads of its feet, black beady eyes and a black plastic nose. He also has a stub of a tail. His head is padded but his body is filled with beans. ---Beanie Bear Information--- Birthday 04/14/99 Style Number 4246 Introduced 05/01/99 Retired (12/23/99) ---Poem --Leaving her den in early spring-- --So very hungry, she'll eat anything-- --Nuts, fruits, berries and fish-- --Mixed together makes a great dish!-- ---Variations--- I also have an identical bear called Pecan which is a more milk chocolate colour. ---Cost--- As this bear is one of the 'retired' beanies the cost is hard to determine. Currently on Ebay Halo II can be picked up for between £2.50 and £15. ---My Opinion--- These Ty Beanies are not supposed to be washed but I always remove the tags when I get them and put them through the washing machine - them I feel that they are nice and clean for me. This is a more realistic looking bear than the beanie teddy bears and does not come with a ribbon or anything like that. He is a just a basic bear - who can be put to sit back on his back legs or put forward and he will then stand on his four legs. I like these natural looking beanies and also have a koala and a super elephant, as well as my cats of course. I think these are good for make believe play - but all the beanies have their place and I also like the colourful comic sort of teddy bears as well. ---Would I Recommend?--- Yes definitely. ---Star Rating--- 5 stars. ---Website--- http://world.ty.com Read the complete review |
