This is one of those items that I bought for my daughter mainly because I fell in love with it! Although I did try and hold back from buying too many things for her when she was first born I couldn't resist this little fella - and in my defence I bought it with some John Lewis vouchers that I had, thus making it 'free'. Sort of...
So this Jellycat zebra comes in two sizes - 20cm and 30cm. Searching online they cost in the £10-£15 region. The version we have is the larger version.
This toy is suitable from birth and uses only two colours - black and white. It is very soft to touch but it has a cotton-like feel rather than being fluffy or furry. He is also quite floppy - this zebra certainly won't stand up un-aided!
On each foot he also has two plastic rings, again in black and white, which make a rattly sound when the zebra is shaken or giving a vigorous cuddle, and could be used as teething rings. He has a very cute little face with quite a serious expression, and he also has a few nice thick tufts of hair. He also has a little tail with tufts too. There is a lot here to keep a baby amused and entertained with the different things to feel and pull. Or so I thought...
The zebra also has a velcro loop on his back which attached nicely to my little girl's cot when she was a baby.
I'm alone in liking this one...
Now I have mentioned before that I bought this simply because I loved it. I think I liked that it was a bit different - not the usual bright colours, big smiley expressions and super-soft bodies that you get with other baby toys. This seemed more like a grown up baby toy and it just really appealed to me.
But sadly .... I was the only one! My daughter has never shown any interest in our poor zebra. Instead he remained neglected and, now she is three, has been relegated to her wardrobe! He has never had a cuddle or any love from her. So now baby number two is on its way I shall try my luck with him/her and then if that doesn't work I think I'll give up and keep the zebra for myself!
A risky buy ...
I think this is a lovely, unique soft toy and would make a great, slightly unusual gift for new parents. But, be warned, in my (admittedly very limited) experience, poor old zebra does nothing for the little ones!
There are slightly different versions of this toy available, including a pink and white striped giraffe and a orange and white striped elephant that, at a glance, look exactly the same as my zebra except for the colourings!
