London 2012 Union Jack Wenlock
Advantages: A nice 2012 souvenir, cute
My husband and I were lucky enough to attend some of the Olympic events last year during London 2012. We had an absolutely amazing time and were so pleased we were able to get tickets. We went ourselves and did not take our kids because they were a bit too young but we wanted to get them a souvenir of the games that in years to come we could all look back upon and remember.
We decided to buy my little girl a Wenlock. So, who is Wenlock? Wenlock, along with Manderville, were the official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in London,United Kingdom. They were the weird looking mascots with only one eye and a funny body. I didn't particularly like them in the beginning but they grew on me and when I read about the idea and the history and background about them I liked them even more.
According to an article I read, "According to the associated (fictional) storyline, they were formed from the last girder of the Olympic Stadium. Their skins are made of highly polished steel allowing them to reflect the personalities and appearances of the people they meet. Their one eye is a camera and on their heads are yellow lights symbolizing those of a London Taxi."
The article goes on to explain a little bit about Wenlock. "Wenlock's name is inspired by Much Wenlock in Shropshire, England, where in 1850 the Wenlock Olympian Society held its first Olympian Games, regarded as an inspiration for the modern Olympic games. The five friendship rings on his wrists correspond to the five Olympic rings, and three points on his head represent the three places on the podium."
We decided to buy my little girl a Wenlock because she loves soft toys and also everywhere you went there was Wenlock. He turned up on advertising, at the games themselves, on decorations around the various venues and in the gift shop and so we thought he would be a great reminder of the games. We bought ours from the Earls Court venue where we saw the Mens basketball and I like that we got it from an official venue as it means a bit more in my opinion than if we just bought it in Tesco or somewhere like that.
We bought the Union Jack Wenlock as I thought this was a bit more fitting than just the regular grey coloured one. The Union Jack Welock features the colours red, blue and white is a pattern that follows the look of a proper Union Jack. There is the 2012 logo stitched onto his body as well. Wenlock is nice and soft and cuddly and has been a nice addition to our soft toy collection.
