“ Brand: Rainbow Designs / Type: Soft Toy „
As most of you will know we opened our Lifeboat Shop here in Llandudno last October. We used to have a stall on the prom every Sunday during the summer but now we have a bright, shiny shop which will be open every day except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Apart from the obvious benefits of being indoors with access to a kettle the other big thing for us is the fact that we can have much more stock and a wider variety. For example we couldn't have chocolate or jams on the prom because, if the sun shone, they would melt! We were also limited on space so we couldn't stock the bigger items like the lovely model ships or the biggest of the teddy bears. When we stocked our shop we had all the bears that we had always stocked on the prom together with three or four of the big bears - one of which is Johnny Bear. I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him but stressed to my husband that he must not buy one for me as I have lots of bears and nowhere to display them. We have a log burner so I can't display my bears on shelves as they get filthy so I need to get a glass fronted cabinet sorted out for them. On Christmas Day I began to open my presents and was a bit baffled by a large squashy parcel beneath the tree. When I felt it there was something hard and flat inside too so I guessed that it was a pair of boot style slippers with hard soles. Imagine my surprise when I opened it to find Johnny Bear clutching a DVD of the latest Narnia film! As usual my husband had taken a whole lot of no notice of me! I ought to be used to it by now really! Anyway Johnny can be found on the RNLI website at http://www.rnlishop.org.uk/ - just search for Johnny Bear using the box at the top of the page - and he currently costs £17.95 plus £3.95 postage and packing. Obviously if you go into a lifeboat shop to buy him he will just cost the £17.95 although the smaller shops may not have room to stock the larger bears. Johnny is a sitting bear as opposed to a standing bear and his height, when seated, is 35cm or 14 inches. He has a tag on his bottom which lets us know he was made in China. He is not suitable for children under one year old and he can be hand washed. He has another tag in his ear which tells us his name and asks the question 'Please will you give this bear a good home?' Who could resist? He has pale golden fur with soft felt pads on his paws and is VERY soft and cuddly. His eyes are plastic and well stitched in and he has a lovely smiley expression on his face. He is wearing a blue and white striped rugby style top with a little collar and three buttons at the neck. It has the RNLI flag embroidered on it together with the word Lifeboats. He also has R.N.L.I. embroidered on the base of his right foot. So there you are - he is a beautiful and extremely well made bear and buying him is indirectly helping to save someone's life! What could be better than that? Of course, if you are ever in Llandudno, do pop into the new Lifeboat shop and say 'hello' and meet Johnny Bear.
