For children, only the best is good enough

Little compares to the excitement of preparing for a new baby and when my husband and I discovered that we were expecting our second child we savoured each and every moment. We picked out and purchased a cot and decorated it with beautiful bedding. We bought the amusingly expensive swinging chair that we had heard so many good reviews about. We gradually purchased all of the essential items that we would need, this time with less naivety and far more experience as to what can be described as essential.

Lastly we bought a small selection of toys, all of which suitably feminine as we discovered that we were expecting a daughter. How wonderful to know that we had 'one of each' and the job was done! Our daughter Perdita, born just two weeks ago, was treated to her first rag doll, a rather pretty pony rattle, a little mouse hand puppet and her very first Steiff toy.

I personally adore Steiff and have a very special Steiff bear of my own. Knowing that both my parents and my husband's parents had stored away our very first treasured toys, I could not think of a more suitable brand than Steiff as a first toy. In fact, having not considered this when my son was born, I promptly ordered him his first Steiff bear too.

For our little boy who is almost two years old I purchased a very beautiful and traditional pull along bear on wooden wheels. For our baby daughter I purchased the Lenchen Lamb Grip Toy from Steiff's baby range.

Lenchen Lamb is a rather sweet little lamb soft toy which stands at 12cm high. The forehead and ears, arms, paw pads and tail are made from an incredibly soft short pile fur fabric. Upon feeling this material beneath your fingers it is difficult to resist stroking and touching it again. It is a wonderfully suitable choice of texture for a new baby.

The main body of this character, matched with the inner ears, displays a white cotton fabric with pink stripes. This gives the appearance that the little lamb is wearing pyjamas.

Stitched to the rump is an embroidered flower to add a little extra femininity.

The lower half of the face consists of pure white fabric with rather endearing embroidered facial detail. Situated at the ear is of course the famous Steiff gold button and tag.

Lenchen Lamb is not simply a soft toy. There are two further features, a rattle which I believe is situated somewhere in the head and a wooden grip and teething ring, held securely in the ring of fur fabric that is the lamb's arms.

This fabulous little toy cost £19.99 and was purchased from www.steiffteddybears.co.uk. It was despatched promptly by Bell Air Gallery and packaged inside a fabric drawstring bag within a rigid cardboard box. The drawstring bag is of the same size as a small sports shoulder bag and is rather useful in itself for storing away toys or books. Delivery on all toys from this site is free of charge.

Steiff Lenchen Lamb must be gently surface washed when required and must not be tumble dried or ironed.

Steiff really is a mark of quality and stated on an information card delivered alongside this product is a further indication of this. The card states at the very top "For children, only the best is good enough".

A little further down the information reads "For over a century now, we have been conscious of the responsibility we bear towards our children. That is why this baby product is made of high-quality materials that comply with the strict Oko-Tex Standard. In addition, as well as the CE Safety Mark, this product also carries the quality certificate of the LGA QualiTest GmbH".

This product is perhaps one that most would not simply buy on impulse. It does however make a wonderful first toy to be treasured in years to come and maybe even passed on to a further generation in time. It would also make a very special gift for a Baptism, a naming ceremony, a baby shower or indeed a very first Christmas gift.
