Ty Beanie Baby
Advantages: None for me other than he has sentimental value
Disadvantages: Poor quality and expensive
As my husband is fully aware of my love for adorable cuddly toys, for our very first Valentine's Day as husband and wife he presented me with Garfield from the Ty Beanie Babies collection and this review discusses the mischievous little chap.
I have to admit that I'm not much of a fan of Garfield and have never really enjoyed watching the cartoons due to the fact that his voice is not cute. Daft, I know especially when I adore cats and have owned four during my lifetime. Garfield measures approximately 22 cm in length and is made from a short pile orange fur fabric. If you are familiar with this character you will be aware of his rather odd looking face, which gives me the impression that he's grimacing and consequently, gives him a miserable and fed up expression. I never realised how small Garfield's eyes are until I scrutinised my soft toy and I am of the opinion that they are glued as opposed to being safety fastened. However, his pale pink prominent nose is safety fastened as I am able to feel the fastening through the fabric.
Garfield wears a sturdy pair of bright red plastic sunglasses, which are sewn to both sides of his head with a few stitches, which enable the glasses to be displayed either on the top of his head or over his eyes. Whilst my toy has never been played with and has simply been sat on a chest of drawers for the past five years I believe that over time children would find the glasses and eyes could possibly detach themselves and I would have concerns over the tiny plastic eyes becoming lodged in a small child's throat.
His furry ears are perched on the top of his head with the inner section being manufactured from a soft rubbery fabric, which I believe would easily become worn if the toy is played with. There are three strands of thick black wool situated on the outer edges of his ears and these are firmly attached despite me giving them a good tug and making him yelp! The familiar heart shaped Ty authenticity tag is attached to one of his ears with the inner section displaying an area for the purchaser to write a Valentine's message. Despite me receiving this as a Valentine's gift from hubby he failed to provide me with some loving words!
I cannot state that this toy has been particularly well made as there are loose black threads on his paws, which have not been correctly finished and I am unable to cut them as the thread has been used to separate his paws and could subsequently unfasten. His legs are a little bizarre as the left one has been incorrectly positioned as both of his feet are pointing away from the left hand side of his body, so he would never be able to walk forwards. However, somebody mentioned to me that Garfield always walks sideways, so perhaps this is how his legs are supposed to be positioned, but they definitely look rather odd.
Garfield wears a cute and well made black cotton shirt, which is adorned with bright red love hearts displaying the words "I", "Love", "You". I have never tried to remove his shirt, as the front sections are sewn together with a few stitches, but the shirt is not attached to his body. The rear of Garfield is rather cute as his fur has been designed to display black stripes to depict tiger markings. His tail is long and curvy with the tip being covered with a soft black rubbery fabric, but over the years the edges have slightly worn in a few areas. Garfield sits on his bottom, which has been filled with P.E. plastic pellets, but he frequently falls over and I have to prop him up against the wall. According to the label on his bottom the remainder of his body has been filled with polyester fiber, he is surface washable only and is suitable for aged 3 years upwards. I do not believe this toy has been made to last and for that reason he receives only 3 stars from me and I am unsure about recommending him. I was shocked to discover the price for this toy on Amazon as at the time of writing he will cost you £14.95 inclusive of postage and packing.
I hope you found my review useful and thank you for reading.
