BlackBerry Messenger BBM
by cocorocky I've had my BlackBerry for over 2 months now and yes i like it. I do like BBMessenger. It's definately got it's advantages! I enjoy using BlackBerry Messenger, It's like Instant Messenger on your phone. It's pretty basic, you can send IM messages through to other BBM users. The added advantages are that you are able to send ... picture messages and videos via BBM which is fantastic is you don't see your friends often and have children or whatnot to update them with. I use this service as i have friends that also have BlackBerrys, however, my boyfriend also is a BlackBerry user now that he has upgraded. It is a great feature to use when in a long distance relationship and can make life easier knowing that they are just there, on instant messanger anytime, on your phone. I bet your thinking, but you can send picture messages on any phone to any phone anyway, well Ladies and Gentlemen, through BlackBerry Messenger it's free. Instead of 30p a text you can send several picture messages for free! The is a bit of an annoying 'Ping' that is the BBM alert tone but this can always be modified when setting ringtones and tone alerts. You'll also be pleased to know that it doesn't go off if you have set your BlackBerry to the 'All Alerts Off' sound profile. There is special BBM software that is already installed onto your BlackBerry which occasionally needs updating which is simple to do and your BB will notify you when it is neccisary to do so. The update is done by using your BB ID and Password and updating the software, quick and simple. A great feature of the BlackBerry Messenger is the group chat. With group chat you are able to invite several differnet people from your BBM contacts list and add them to the conversation, there are several different situtations where this would be very useful. For example, I'm currently at University and as part of many of my assignments i have to work as part of a group, the group contact on BBM is a great way of keeping in touch with all of the team members and discuss the work. As it's an IM feature we are able to reply stright away and know that we will get ansered immediately as apposed to emails where it may not be so instant. I really enjoy using the BBM and i would say that it has helped out a lot, especially within my long distance relationship. A feature on your phone that maintains a healthy relationship and gets me a degree? I'm all for it! Read the complete review |

BlackBerry Messenger BBM
by jodiannee Where to start with BBM messenger? It's useful to say the least. It a fast and easy way to speak to your friends and other blackberry users. It uses the internet so the connection speed is usually fast, of course this can vary depending on your signal. You can have display pictures, personalized display names and status'. ... With the new BBM messenger you can also play games with other BBM users, depending on what phone you have. BBM is a great way to talk to your friends, or even make new ones. I find asking someone for their BBM pin is less personal and forward than asking for their number. Using BBM you can have group conversations with all your friends and also start up groups where a a group of people can talk, exchange pictures and other stuff. You can send pictures to your friends, voice clips and videos. It's similar to IM'ing and I find people reply to BBM's a lot faster than texts. It's basically like having MSN on your phone. You have the usual emotions, plus a few more that you can copy and paste off the name, or other people's display names, such as cute bows or England flags. A massive advantage of BBM is the fact you can BBM anyone in the world, no matter where they are. Which saves a lot of money on texting if you're in England and your best friend is in America. You can keep in contact and chat everyday without it costing you a fortune. Wanna know if someones read your message? BBM tells you with a little R next to the message indicating the person has seen your message and read it, so you know if someone's ignoring you. Also it tells you the message has been sent with a small D next the message. So they can't claim that haven't received your message. The person still not replied? You can simply ping them, which vibrates their phone. However, if you can't be bothered to reply to someone you can read the first few words of their reply without having to open the message. So on their screen it still says D. Also, if a little red clock comes up next to your message that means there's a problem with your signal. Another useful thing about BBM is if you want to speak to someone you just type their display name in and it searches for them. Saves you scrolling through all your BBM contacts to find that one person. Downside? Broadcasts. Possibly the most annoying thing about BBM is the broadcasts. This is where people send out a message to everyone in their contacts, usually pointless messages such as, "Rate me out of 10" or "I love Chloe 4eva xoxoxo" or some chain letter about Johnny being killed by a ghost. Yeah, mainly things you don't care about. Unfortunately you can't block these broadcasts, nor can you block a person. You can only delete them, but if the other person wants to speak to, bam, you've gone off their list and they have a sneaky suspicious that you've deleted them. BBM is something I couldn't live without. I felt lost without it when the whole BBM network was down. Luckily I could still text, but most the people I speak to on BBM I don't even have their number. BlackBerry Messenger BBM
by RoJo11 I have a contract Blackberry 9300 3G Curve that came with Blackberry Messenger on as standard, I use this for personal use only. Blackberry Messenger is an inter-blackberry instant messaging programme that is free to use on the contract that I'm on (most Blackberrys on contract offer BBM included as part of the cost). I find the ... messaging system easy to use, with a similar layout to other instant messaging programmes such as MSN Messenger. Adding contacts to BBM can be done using the other Blackberry user's name, email address or PIN number, or by scanning a PIN barcode using the camera on your Blackberry. I find by far the easiest was to add people is using their PIN number (which can be found under the settings menu in the status category), however, I've been able to successfully add contacts using the barcode in the past but had problems using their e-mail addresses. Contacts can even be categorised accordingly (Friends/Family, or even different companies or departments for business use) Conversations are very much like exchanging text messages with a main difference that you're given an update as to the status of your sent message. Whilst the message is being sent a loading circle appears next to the message, this changes to a tick when your phone has successfully sent it. When the other Blackberry receives this a D (for delivered) appears next to the tick which then changes to an R (for received) when the other person has actually opened the message on BBM, so you can't use the "I didn't receive it" excuse anymore! BBM Conversations even appear in your message list along with your texts to make it even quicker to access. Multiperson chats can be started that many BBM users can join in on. BBM allows you to send pictures, voice notes, files, other BBM and Phone contacts, appointments and your own contact info. It also allows you to send users locations of where you currently are (this can be slow if it takes a while to 'find' satellites, but very neat nonetheless). The file limit must be quite high as I've managed to send music files over BBM before - brilliantly easy way to send music over a longer distance than bluetooth. Two features I don't use on BBM, but I can see has potential is firstly the ability to broadcast a message (possibly advertising an impulse party perhaps?) and Blackberry Groups, which are mini-communities you can set up (and chose whether only you, or all members can invite new members) that allow multiple chats to be set up in the group, pictures to be shared along with lists and calenders. I can see that this would be helpful for business use or to organise club activities. When setting up Blackberry you chose your display name (other people can edit what they see your display name as - e.g. if they know you by a different name) and you can upload a profile picture, each Blackberry user gets one of these mini profiles that gives a shortcut to the user's PIN barcode or BBM PIN to share, and allows users to put up a personal message for your contacts to see (you can even set it to show what you're listening to). They also display your location and time zone (useful if you have international contacts) I find that BBM isn't the most reliable of messaging services unless both parties are connected to a solid WIFI or 3G connection, there can be delays in the messages sending for your phone to theirs, but I use BBM primarily when I need a quick response, or to know if the other party is at their phone. I've been using BBM more since my boyfriend moved off to Uni, only half the campus gets a network signal - with the other half on SOS. Since the campus has an open wifi network my boyfriend's Blackberry is connected to this and allows his friends and family to be able to catch him on his phone - even when he's out of mobile network range.
